Why does Vitiligo start where it does?

y Hi folks

I haven't been on here for a while but still thinking a lot about Vitiligo.

One of the mysteries for me is why my Vit developed where it did (I'll leave the why to the scientists).

Mine started on my hands and so I have often wondered, 'why there?'

What kind of things did I expose my hands to that were, or could be described as catalysts that, given a predisposition towards Vit, triggered the event. Soap, aftershave, oil (from working on cars), shampoo, creams etc etc?

I think the next outbreak was on my face and scalp so, again, what did I use - shampoo, aftershave, soaps, sunblock and so on.

I believe my arm pits were next - soap and deoderants mainly.

My private parts - soap and contraception.

I just wonder if there is a common link in all of these external elements that seem to target the extremities of our bodies. I appreciate that my Vit is both generalised and bilateral which isn't what everyone has, and neither was my body immune from all of these agents i.e. I didn't just wash my face!.

What is it about the extremities of our bodies and Vit?

My best wishes to you all.

Mike :-)

  • This is interesting, and I have often wondered about this myself. In fact, I stumbled across an article recently that talks about this very thing:

    http://veritascures.wordpress.com/2012/12/29/cure-for-vitiligo-the-...

Don't know if there is any truth to it, but it's an good read nonetheless. :)

  • I used a product that had a chemical that I later found  was formaldehyde.  It is called DMDM Hydantoin and it was in a new body wash I used.  My skin on my body just literally burned off.  But, the interesting this is that when I eat popcorn, it progresses and speeds up the white skin.  I love popcorn, so I don't know the link between the two, but I do notice that after I eat it, my skin gets clearer.

  • I only know of one substance that warns people with vitiligo not to use it because it will cause spots. that substance is hair color for men, it has a warning on the box. I almost used it to color a spot of white hair from Vit. but luckly I read the box.

  • For me, vitiligo started at a very young age on my knees.  I don't remember where the my skinned turned white after, but whenever a white patch began to form on one side of my body i knew a white patch was also going to form in the same location on the other side like a mirror.  my feet, knees, hands, wrists, armpits, face...

  • When I was 9 years old my mom cleaned out a deep scrape on my knee with hydrogen peroxide.  When it healed it left a white spot that never went away.  Over many years the white patches spread on both sides of my body.  I believe the stress and fear of being chased by someone, plus the hydrogen peroxide poured in my wound caused my vitiligo.  My mom and my dad, my 2 sisters and 3 brothers never developed vitiligo.  Why me? is what I wonder about.

  • Stress can trigger as well as trauma to the skin/sunburn/cuts injury to the body. But I have also heard that it tends to start on the joints, don't know why? It's such an unknown thing, we may never know! I try and use products for sensitive skin like QV as there's less chemicals. I once used proactive and noticed it spread my vitiligo, it's ingredients have chemicals that bleach! I stopped it straight away!
  • I've done a lot of research and seen a lot of dermatologists... I do know that vitiligo that develops primarily on joints first like knuckles, knees, ankles, etc. Is actually a sign of your vitiligo being an autoimmune disease. .. meaning it was genetic and can be triggered just by stress :( mine started when I was 6 with one spot on my finger.
  • when the doctor diagnosed my vitiligo, i told her that it may be as a result of a specific deordorant use (i also have vitiligo in my armpits) . she said no way, and nobody knows why it happends.

  • Often wonder the same thing. Weird how it shows up on opposite side of the body like a mirrored image
