My son was diagnosed at 5 years old with vitiligo. It was only on his hands and with Protopic he repigmented. He is 8 now and it has rapidly spread all over his body. We are in the process of getting a NB UVB light to start light therapy. We ae praying for success. As a parent, it just kills you to see your child have any illness or disease. I wish I could take it from him. I am constantly searching the Internet for any hope. I did find this posting: http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2013-02/luhs-mpc022513.php. Has anyone seen it? What are your thoughts? I pray every day that a cure is found to help my son and everyone afflicted with vitiligo.

Coincidence ..... Am in the Dead Sea for three weeks trip...
@ Cheryl, you are not alone. My son 7 yrs with vitiligo. It all started last year Autmn. But we were not aware..we thought tit was just dry skin and go away. When our dematalist confirmed that thi is Vitiligo in April we left with no clue other than sadness. But we have some hope to cure vitiligo. We strongly believe that food plays important role in this vitiligo. We are planning to give diary and gluten free foods and pure vegetarian. There are repigmentation in face due to protopic and he is undergoing UVB a well via NHS.
@ Simon, I am having appointment with Dr.Karin this November. Have you finished your initial appointment ?
Regarding trip to Dead Sea and stay for 2-3 weeks, yes it is very expensive. I came across this experience from a forum post with vitiligosociety in uk (as stated by Simon in the above link) and visited jordan for 21 days. i will post you all if there are any sign of improvement after a month.
Simon, I have seen various info on the Dead Sea. Is there a program for people with vitiligo? Could you tell me the cost? Not sure it would be feasible for us. My son is only 8 years old and we would need to go with him. Any info you have would be great!
There loads of treatments that "could work" but the only truly effective Vitiligo treatment I've seen out there which has a claimed 98% success rate is a trip to the Dead Sea in Jordan. There are two sides to this.
Some claim it's purely the climate and the purity of the dead sea water that cause repigmentation:
Others say, it's combined with pseudocatalase cream (PC-KUS) and Dr Dr. Karin U. Schallreuter in Germany runs a Dead Sea program(of which I'm taking in part in June next year). It's very expensive but It's the only thing that I've come across that has a real chance of helping re-pigment.

I'll be writing a blog post about it soon!
