vitiligo - childhood onset

has anyone had their vitiligo since childhood? im trying to analyze the relation between childhood onset and the spread of the disease. what ive found so far is that vitiigo spreads much much faster if you get it later in life. can anyone attest?

  • My daughter just turned 5 and her first spot showed up about 10 months ago. She is now covered about %50 of her body
  • I got mine when I was five by falling on some rocks that cut my leg, When the cut healed It Became a white spot. But It spread when I was young, I had way more stress when I was younger than I do now I've learned to control it. Some of my spots have gone away over the years but I do get new ones sometimes, I think its the same amount of spots Ive always had, they just move. O and every time I get cut or damage my skin when it heals it is a new spot.
  • Well, mine appeared when I was in third grade, then stabilized and shrank somewhat later in childhood. It was on my knees, one elbow, both hands and my neck. It was dormant until a few months ago (I'm 27 now) and is coming on strong. I'm finding new spots regularly. They are now spreading across my hands, wrists and maybe my knees, but I'm very white so I can't quite be sure until I tan them up a bit. So, that's probably geared against your theory, but it's what I've got. Good luck with your study!
  • Hi Alex,
I had a very stressful childhood and as a matter of fact I believe that is why my vitiligo started on my knee when I was around 9 years old. I was running from someone who was constantly trying to molest me. I fell in our gravel driveway, scraped my knee badly and when it healed it left my first white patch. I kept a lot of emotional pain inside me and never talked to anyone about it. My vit spread a lot during puberty, during my pregnancies and I finally became total vitiligo (depigmented) when I went through menapause. I don't mean to offend anyone with my honest words, but I believe my hormones had a lot to do with my progression of vitiligo.
    Talk to you later, Patty
  • I am 29 and got mine 5 years ago, its been moderate so far.
  • I have had it since I was 8. I am now 34 yrs old. I am 95% white now even though I am black. lol. I don't know if this helps you.
  • Mine first appeared when I was about 10 years old, and hasn't changed much since. It affects most of my body, but I'm fair skinned so it's less noticeable. I remember being devastated and had trouble coping through my teenage years! I was put on a protopic at the time, but this didn't appear to work so I didn't use it for long - wouldn't be keen to use them long-term now anyway. It's hard to remember but I'm pretty sure in the first few years most new patches began with a eczema-like rash before depigmenting. My grandmother also had vitiligo. I'm now 28 and trying all kinds of self-prescribed treatments including vitamins and supplements to fight back! Great to hear your stories, guys! So good to know I'm not alone and I'm encouraged by your strength and support xxx
