Vitliigo and the sun

I've been using protopic for a few weeks now and have noticed some small spots of repigment on my face, I heard protopic is more effective when getting sun or UVB exposure or something like that. Well I wear makeup most of the time and it's difficult for me to not wear makeup in public but that's makes the getting more sun thing even more hard. Does anybody else have this problem and if so how do you work around it? Do u think the makeup will interfere with the sun exposure?

  • Vincent, I don't know where you live but if you can hang out working on your car or something even for 15 minutes in the sun in the morning before you have to put the makeup on and go to work it will help. Move around in the morning sun with your shirt off and keep your face to the sun, wear sunglasses.

That's what I do and it seems to help. It cheers me up too!

    Good luck with all.

  • Hi Vincent:

I'm new to this site and came across your blog. I have vit. on my face too and have been using Protopic along with sun exposure. 3 times a week for a half hour. I wear make-up every day. When I come home from work I take off the make-up and site in the sun. On the weekends, I don't put on make-up until I've had a chance to sit in the sun. So it's a pain to live your life around sun exposure, but the make-up has a high amount of pigment in it which blocks the sun. So you won't get the result with the make-up on. I've been doing this for 5 years now. Every summer June-September I do this because I get a lot of color back. The problem is that when you go through the winter months you start to lose the color you gained. So it's not a cure. It's a very temporary fix. So far, it's worth it to me. Soon though I'm going to give up the fight so I can live through the summer months.

    Take care,
    Shelley
    • Thanks shelley, I will try that, this past weekend I went near the pool and sat in the sun for awhile and tried reading a book, I am starting to feel a little more comfortable without the makeup and it's getting a bit easier, good luck with your treatment, I hope the months ahead get easier for you wether you do decide to wear the makeup or not
      • Hey Vincent! You too. I hope you feel comfortable enough to ditch the make-up. There's so many of us out there with vitligo. Just last night I went to the grocery store without make-up on. Got a couple of stares, but I didn't care. Then when I was taking my groceries out to the car I saw a man with vitiligo too. So it's more common I think than we realize. Good luck to you. We all here for each other!
