Vitiligo Awareness Day June 25th?

Wonder if it would make sense to start a Web campaign to have June 25th be Vitiligo Awareness Day.  That will be the one-year anniversary of Michael Jackson's death, and there's sure to be a resurgence in discussion of his Vitiligo.

If we did this, any ideas of events, activities, or other ways of getting publicity?  I'm guessing the primary goal would be to provide support for children and adults who have Vitiligo and feel lonely or separated from others because of it.

  • Steve,
I know I am coming in late on this post, but this
Is a wonderful idea. What can I do to help?
I think something that stands out would be great to
    Help with awareness of vitiligo.

      Hello Paula,

We have taken it off from where Steve stopped and starting mark the June 25th as Vitiligo Awareness Day this year and will be making detailed plan for 2012. See a campaign page on that on facebook http://www.facebook.com/pages/World-Vitiligo-Day-June-25th/19107413...

SO many people have identified with it, another group http://www.facebook.com/VITILIGOBONDINC in USA is working towards that and another in Indonesia with different indiviuals Identifying with the cause. Its our work to do, its only us that can bring Vitiligo to Wrold Center Stage.......

      Thanks

      Ogo

      • I would love to help with this as well...
  • That would be AWESOME!!!!
  • I think that the underlining theme to Vitiligo Awareness Day is: More than Michael.

Because Vitiligo clearly affects more of the population than Michael Jackson - all of us for example. Through each post we see how varied we are and how varied our experiences are but one thing connects us: Vitiligo.

The reason I believe that Steve suggested June 25th be known as Vitiligo Awareness Day is that Michael Jackson will always be the most famous person with Vitiligo. Seriously, nobody can deny that! For most people, he is the face of Vitiligo. He is the introduction to what we've got.

With his death there was a resurgence in the media about his music, his accomplishments, his trials and tribulations and of course his appearance and tied to that....Vitiligo!

With Vitiligo being talked about so heavily at that time in the media, and certainly not in a positive light. It was at that time that I decided to come to terms with how it's affected my life and I joined this and other online Vitiligo communities. And It's done a lot of good in my life!

So, I can't deny why I'm here on this board and why I'm working in creating a local Vitiligo support group in my community - it's because of Michael Jackson.

For me June 25th as Vitiligo Awareness Day isn't in celebration or to honor Michael Jackson but more as a way to steer the media in acknowledging that Vitiligo affects more than just Michael Jackson.

I propose it be Vitiligo Awareness Day: More than Michael.
  • To bad Michael Jackson didn't support any causes for Vitiligo, so I disagree with taking his name onto anything dealing with the awareness of vitiligo. If anyone, ANYONE, can show me that the man supported a cause/ awareness / charity /or something Please let me know. I just think credit should be given when due.

As for the autopsy, I don't care what it said. The man had more money then probably any of us on here and we all know that money talks. RIP, MJ and your music will be missed, but I don't support tacking his name onto anything having to do with vitiligo.

YOU GUYS ARE MY SUPERSTARS and the ones who bring light to the condition.

    Smooches!
  • I love this idea and think it would be a great way to honor Michael Jackson's life and at the same time bring awareness to this genetic auto immune skin disease.

Let me know if I can help in any way, I am off work with pay for the summer right now.
  • Russia joins your ideas!
