Visit to the dermatologist

I went to the dermatologist today for the first time since I was diagnosed a while ago. I have read a LOT about Vitiligo and am familiar with all the treatments etc etc. for $190 I was told "you are fair skinned, it's not that noticeable" and "I'm sorry but there is absolutely nothing I can do for you". He then proceeded to print a fact sheet on vitiligo to give me and tried to send me on my way! I had to persuade him to give me a script for some topical prescription. It just confirmed for me why I hadn't been back in years. If this would have been my first diagnosis I would have been devastated by his lack of interest. As is, I think I will continue to focus on natural therapy, herbs and nutrition, unless someone knows of an experienced vitiligo dermatologist in Perth Australia?

  • I'm from Adelaide and my derm is similar, I don't bother going back anymore! Long waits, gp referrals, expensive and useless! I have learnt more on this site than from my dermatologist. I was once able to persuade my derm to prescribe tacrolimus cream- this is just a different name for the immunosuppressant protopic (lots of Americans on here mention it being useful). If you go back again, research first so you know what to ask for to make sure it's worth the time and money! Good luck with natural remedy, I'm trying to do the same :) Jess
  • For 200$ your doc told you the same thing as mine told me for free :D :D . They can help you with blisters or with some minor rash , cause the same medical shampoo is good for both , dries your skin and you are good to go :D

Wayne said it - they would quickly find lots of interesting info if that was for their kids or themselves .

If there is no cure for Viti then im a gangsta rapper :) and so is your doc :D

  • Hi Manuela,
It seems the same in Australia as it is in the UK when it comes to white skin people with Vit the dermatologist don't see it as major problem-I'm sure if they had the condition their attitude would change 'sad but true'
    Chin up
