New and Clueless (I am a parent)

Hi Everyone,

My daughter who is 3 months, was diagnosed with Vitiligo yesterday. I have tried researching as much as I can, but there really isn't a lot... I get that each case is unique and it is impossible to predict.

But other then protecting her with sunscreen, is there anything else that I can do to help? Since she is so young, I know it is difficult. I don't want to do something that will make it worse, but I also I don't want her to feel she has to hide it either. I know she is so young, and I am probably over thinking a million things about the future. I am just so clueless.

Any insight or information would be greatly appreciated. I know this isn't really a question, I just feel so lost and don't know how I can help her right now.

  • My son was diagnosed at 7, he is 12 now. I think it has always been harder on me than it ever has been on him. It really doesn't seem to phase him and he says he doesn't remember not having it. He also thinks him look unique and says his knees are the coolest part of his body. We are heading into the teen years, so I hope he continues to feel this way! Good luck with your precious baby!
  • Please don't panic and try not to use steroid or cortisone creams.  They tend to cause more harm in the long run.   She is too young and try any treatments.  Are you breastfeeding?  be careful of the formula you are giving her and try to choose the best possible one.  Hopefully it will not progress and when she gets older you can try giving her supplements.  Perhaps you can try some natural excellent quality oils like organic virgin olive oil, organic coconut oil, organic mustard oil.  I would try to get the best quality organic that don't have any artificial ingredients.

It will be okay.  Enjoy this precious age.  and keep us updated but I don't think there is anything more you can try until she gets older.

    • Thank you everyone!

I wasn't leaning towards anything cosmetic... I think that should be her own personal decision when she gets older. I just want to make sure I am doing everything possible to benefit her.

Our doctor also doesn't agree with the use of steroid cream, nor do  I think I want to use it on such a young baby either.

I am breastfeeding, I was thinking of upping my B vitamins and Folic acid ...  but not sure if it will transmit through breastmilk? But I guess it doesn't hurt anyone.

I will look into the organic stuff to! Thank you for that advice. There is just not a lot of information on vitiligo in infants.

We are trying to make this a positive thing, and do what is best for her. I certainly do not want to put any insecurities on her. I know she is still extremely young, so I want put my best foot forward so when she is old enough to understand I can be a strong asset for her and not someone who is lost and scared... which I have felt over the past few days.

      Thank you again everyone.

  • I was 13 when I first started showing my vitiligo.  Not a great age!  But because my parents always told me when I was young that the most important thing is to be beautiful on the inside, I never considered cosmetic treatments, even at that age (although as a teenager it was a great excuse to get my mom to let me wear makeup).  :)  I'm not recommending you shouldn't try anything (good nutrition is obviously beneficial for more than just reversing vitiligo), but as far as cosmetic treatments, I never did anything and I've never regretted it.  My husband thinks I'm unique, awesome and beautiful.  I hardly ever wear makeup anymore.  If you find a way to reverse it naturally and nutritionally, I say, great!  But as far as cosmetically, I think a great thing you can do is encourage your daughter, even from such a young age, to be beautiful on the inside.  Just my experience.  :)

  • Listen to the bright side. Its a radio show that explains how to reverse degenerative disease. Its amazing stuff. I know of three girls off the top of my head that used this approach (food and nutritional supplementation) to reverse vitiligo virtually 100%. This is what we should all be doing because the body is designed to heal itself givin the right nutrients. I could write pages worth on here but it'd take too long and ive already explained alot on my page.
    • Where can I find this? I tried googling, and it didn't come up with anything.

      • You can listen to it at brightsideben.com go to the site, click on the archives page and if i were you, i would start from tge beginning which i believe is November 2010 there is so much info provided its a real jewel (: it's real truthful knowledge aswell.
