About Me:

Mother of a 15 year old girl and a 11 year old boy, both diagnoised with vit 2 months ago. Recently found a spot on the back of my hand that looks like it could be the start of vitiligo. I have been so consumed by this for the past several weeks . Any advice would be sooo welcome. I'm trying to find a balance between not obsessing over the kids' white spots and doing what I can to treat them. Both kids only have one spot each at this point.

  • I'm sorry I never saw this comment and didnt reply sooner.

I actually use a Loreal brand with a quick dry element. It's very inexpensive and seems to work okay. Im sure that if I spend a bit more I could get a product with a bit less orange. This seems to work good enough for now. I've also done the spray tanning and that gives a nice all around even look.

    Good luck and happy repigging.

  • Roanoke is a great place. My family lives there and I still visit as often as I can. My vitiligo tends to be more symmetrical. I have it on both hands, arms, knees, upper legs and feet. I also have it around one eye and on the corners of my mouth. It is a lot less noticeable when I don't have a tan. I have never treated my vitiligo. Everyone I have been exposed to throughout my life have been very accepting and I have never felt self-conscious. I feel vitiligo make me unique and I, personally, don't like the idea of taking medication for a condition that is not life threatening. Thanks for the comment. Take care.
  • Thank you for the comments. Yes, I have extensive Vitiligo. I have used many different products and what I am using at the moment is the Jergens self tanning lotion. It is great....you can really work the color because it starts off very light. It is my favorite so far. I recently went to the NYC conference and experienced Microskin. It is based in Australia but will be coming to the US in Feb. of next year. It was remarkable! I can't wait!
  • nice to meet u n thanx 4 join'n group..srry havt been on n while jus feeln'n a lil discuraged..
  • Thank you so much! Currently I'm using Loreal sublime bronze self-tanning gelee in medium natural tan, which is available for just under $10 at the drugstore. I use Clarins self-tanner for the face to prevent oily skin and breakouts. I always exfoliate and put a little lotion on my knees, elbows, feet, and knuckles before applying for an even tone. It does work on the hands, however since you wash your hands throughout the day, it wears off quicker. As for make-up, I use drugstore foundation that is closest to my pigmented skin and do spot treatments on my face (I now have some spots around my eyes and on forehead near hairline). I use a bronzing powder in the summer also...I never spend too much on make-up.
Unfortunately, my vitiligo is spreading more as I get older (probably due to stress) and I don't mean to stress you out more, but thanks to my supportive family and friends its made it easier to deal with. In high school I had spots on my feet, knees, hips, thighs, hands, arms and random spots on my back and shoulders. Although I felt insecure, I thankfully did not have any problems making friends. Even though I've had vit since I was a baby, my mom didn't take me to the dermatologist until I asked in high school. I actually never thought my skin was a big deal until high school because no one ever mentioned it...It was my own vanity that lead me to believe I wasn't "normal." I determined that the best thing for me at the time was to continue living a normal lifestyle instead of worrying about making my skin all one color. Making that decision I believe led me closer to accepting my skin. I learned that my personality far out-shined my skin and whenever I did mention to friends about my skin they always claimed to have never noticed it. I never had problems with getting boyfriends because of my skin either...if there were problems it was due to my insecurities, not their perception of me and my skin.
Although I care very much about my appearance, I find makeup, spf, and self-tanner suits my lifestyle just fine until the SURE CURE comes out.
I hope I answered all your questions! Welcome to the site! This is my first time joining a supportive network such as this. Hope to hear from you in the future.
