  • Hi..just wondering if any one here has been diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency due to lack of sunlight?
    • I think you have posted this in an existing thread, so it won't be seen by all members. I have plenty of vit D and by doctor assures me that the lost pigment is not involved in vit D synthesis. The only risk, as you suggest, is staying out of sunlight altogether. Effective sunblock (like P20) allows prolonged exposure to sunlight without burning and I depend on it for my outdoor activities with Scouts and the Duke of Edinburgh's award scheme.
  • When I took my daughter to see a professor of dermatology, because she had small patches of vitiligo on her eyelids and knees, he was much more interested in me! I have had complete depigmentation since 2006, when it raced through my hair in a few months. Luckily, my retinas remain unaffected. I have regular eye tests at opticians to keep a check on this critical issue.

What do you use to prevent sunburn? I depend on P20 and a wide brimmed hat in sunny weather. Haven't needed it much this summer ...
    • Hi there Peter ..very pleased to meet you :)

I can't quite remember how long I have been depigmentated but I believe it to be around 15 years now..on the whole I just don't let it bother me..because I am so pale and a red head..pepole just tell me to "get out in the sun girl"..they think I am like it by choice

My eyes have changed colour..I used to have brown eyes but they are now green..It's like they faded..unfortuately for me I have type2 diabetes and this has caused background retinopathy and pressure behind the eyes..the optician refuses to test my eye's again until my sugars are stable..which they are not presently

I lost some hair and have a bald patch..it started to grow back a little and came back white..I have a very understanding hairdresser who cut's it in a way so that it doesn't show :)

Sorry to hear that your daughter has developed Vitiligo..with your help I hope she has a better understanding of the condition..my youngest son of 23 developed white patches on his hips at the age of about 11..luckily for him it has developed no further..are there elders in your family with Vitiligo? There are none in mine

To prevent sunburn I apply factor 50..wear a sun hat and cover up on the beach in white loose cotton trousers and a long sleeved white cotton shirt..I couldn't give a hoot what I look like as long as I don't burn..but sometimes I get caught out.. especially the tops of my ears!

There is one thing that I have been looking for for a long time and that is a big white umberella possibly with Vitiligo on it..

    • Hhi, Dear White Wisper, I joined Vitiligo Friends yesterday and clicked on Groups today, 17th April, 2015. I then clicked on London Vitiligo Support Group and read your post. I felt better after i had read your two posts and replies to them  I am new to this forum and also new to the problem of vitiligo. I  am a man from New Delhi, the capital of India, aged 72 years, and a retired (since 2005) teacher in a Delhi University College. I live here with my wife. My two sons are grown up and independent, having their own families.

As a condition to confirm my membership of Vitiligo Friends, i was asked to write and post a blog story. This was a very welcome idea for me since I love to write creatively. I at once wrote and posted a blog story titled "My Shock with Vitiligo". I append this blog story below for your perusal and critical comments, more so since English is only my second language. Please do not mind my poor English.  My first language is Hindi. My greetings and good wishes to you, your dear ones and to all members of London Vitiligo Support Group. Here below is my blog story ....Sincerely, DKS, 17 April, 2015

      Dear friends,

My first encounter with vitiligo was 40 years ago when my late father's first cousin brother visited our newly built home in New Delhi, the capital city of India. I had last met him about a decade prior to that but I was sure I will recognise him at once at the New Delhi Railway Station. We used to call him 'Billoo Chacha'. As the train arrived at the platform I could not find him in the rush. I waited for the rush to subside, but there was no trace of Billoo Chacha. I was disappointed and prepared to return home alone. And then there was a tap on my shoulder from hehind. I turned round to see an elderly man whose face and hands were pinkish white with vitiligo. "Arre Bhaiya Ji, Pahichanyo naheen humka?" (Oh Bhaiya Ji, you did not recognize me? Bhaiya Ji was my nick name, which only close family used.) The voice was unmistakable .... yes, it was Billoo Chacha indeed. I smiled sheepishly and bent down to touch his feet. But he grabbed my shoulders and embraced me in a tight hug kissing my cheeks and forhead. "Arre hum tumhaar chacha haiyn, Billoo Chacha!" (I am your uncle, Billoo Uncle!) I felt strange. Billoo Chacha had embraced and kissed me hundreds of times in my childhood and youth. But this time, I felt strange in a strange way which I can not describe today after so many years.

We came home from the railway station, Billoo Chacha riding behind me on the pillion of my scooter. I had a troubled feeling in my mind about his meeting my wife for the first time. She looked at him as we entered the house and stood still. I said "Ye humare Billoo Chacha haiyn. Paiyr chhuo. "This is my Billoo Uncle, do touch his feet." She did bend down to pay respects to him, but I noted a strange reluctance in her demeanor. Billoo Chacha stayed for two days with us but our inter-action was never normal. He was graceful in not mentioning it either to us or to our extended family after he returned to our hometown. I soon forgot the whole thing.

My second experience with vitiligo occurred  come ten years ago when there began a marital discord in the family of our relatives. When the bride was first seen by her future groom, she told him that there was a small white spot on her ankle and she proceeded to raise her dress and show the spot to him. He asked her if there were any more spots and she said that this was the only spot. Their meeting had taken place in a sacred Hindu temple. The wedding took place soon after and the couple lived a happy life. But then tragedy struck. Their bike slipped and they were injured and taken to the hospital. During her treatment she was found to be having extensive vitiligo on her lower torso. This was the first time that the husband's family came to know about this. From that incident, things went from bad to worse, ultimately leading to dicsord on many other issues and the couple were legally divorced  I felt sad at the turn of events.

And then I got vitiligo myself in 2013. In September, 2013, I felt a loss of sense of taste. I am very fond of sweets but the sweets began to taste bland. Then I noted that salted foods also began to taste bland. This thing developed slowly and it took me some time to realise what had happened. I did not know what it was. I also did not know how to get this symptom cured. I mentioned it to my brother (a doctor) on the phone and he said that sometimes, after a bout of fever or other illness, the sense of taste is diminished for some time but it gradually returns. I went to a government hospital, where the young doctor told me that i had what is known as a bald tongue. She prescribed some vitamins and minerals and the taste sense did return in a couple months. But then in early December, 2013, my fellow retiree friends in the park began to ask me if there was a change in the color of my lips. I came home and noted that the inside of the lips were becoming pinkish. By December, 2013, the pinkish white color was marked by more and more people. My wife was kind not to say anything.

I talked to two people who had extensive vitiligo. They told me that they did not not know the cause and that they had been under treatment for years but with little improvement. I began looking up the Internet and was baffled by the huge information that was on the Net. I am currently under the treatment of a homeopathic doctor who has raised hope of treatment in a few months. When I began noting that people outside home were beginning to avoid me, I remembered the feeling that i had when Billoo Chacha came visiting us forty years ago. I  am not depressed but I am a bit reserved now. I am already 72 plus, retired from my college teaching job, in receipt of a small but regular pension, have satisfactorily completed my worldy responsibilities, have even had a heart bypass surgery in 2010, and am in reasonable physical and excellent emotional health. The chance to become a member of Vitiligo Friends has given me much joy and I intend to take full interest in this forum and participate in all its events within and outside India. I also intend to make friends with members of Vitiligo Friends and share with them my numerous blog stories. Yes, I have written hundred or so blog stories on my life's experiences since my childhood. I am also fond of Hindi film songs and sports, specially cricket and chess. I also love to travel and recently got an Indian Passport made. I do not smoke, drink alcohol or use drugs. I am a peace loving man and am flexible, adjustable and mature by nature. I love nature and children.
