Was just diagnosed

I just came from the doctor and was diagnosed with vitiligo. I had a strong suspicion that this is what I was dealing with and finally had it confirmed by a dermatologist. My OBGYN noticed my first spot about a year and a half ago on my inner thigh while doing an exam. Since then more spots have started between my legs, my armpits and now my chin. I have to be honest, I wasn't pleased with the bedside manner of the doctor I visited. He took one look at my white spots and said "yup it's vitiligo. I'm going to give you some topical steriods. Come back in 2 months." And that was that. There was no explanation of the disease, options for future treatment... nothing. As devestating as this is I can't believe that he treated me so abruptly and walked out. I am seeing another doctor in a few weeks. For those of you who have been dealing with this disease for some time, what questions should I ask the doctor? Also, what can I expect to have happen to me as time goes on? Thank you so much for your input. I'm so glad I found this forum.

  • My doctor was just as helpful. I'm originally from the States. The steroids do work for a lot of people, though, so that's good. Ginkgo Biloba stops the progression in 80 percent of people.

I would start looking for another dermatologist. Ask people with vitiligo close to you who they see. Call dermatologists and ask them what their experience is. In the meantime, The Vitiligo Society has a great book I'm reading now. Wish I had read it sooner.

Even if you decide to keep your doctor, the best thing you can do is educate yourself. Education will empower you because it will remove a lot of the uncertainty you may have in your mind.
  • Hello,
