Hi, here I go again with my "what-ifs" but I refuse to be content with the usual, "no one knows why it's triggered, it just is." I know that all of us must have some deficiency that makes us prone to vitiligo but that's not good enough for me.
To make a long story short, I had a really, really bad migraine about a month or two ago and took about 4 Excedrin in a matter of about 2 hours and knocked out cold. The next morning I woke up and noticed a slight discoloration in my neck, on the same side of my chin where I lost my pigment. I thought of it as a eureka moment because it totally hit me, "what if my vitiligo was triggered by my migraines?" I've had migraines since I was about 17 or so and they only keep getting worse.
Around the time that I got vitiligo, I had lots of stress and although it's been years and I couldn't be for sure, it is very possible that it may have been triggered by a really bad migraine and subsequently, the vitiligo spread because I keep getting migraines.
What are your thoughts? Any input that you may wanna give? I understand that maybe what triggered my vitiligo is not what triggered yours but I'm pretty sure there's someone out there who may have had a similar issue.
I see my dermatologist this Thursday and I'm planning on discussing it with him although I doubt something may come out of it, but I'm determined to do something about it.
I must point out though, that these last 2 or 3 months I've been getting severe migraines on the same side of my vitiligo (which is normally where I get 90% of my migraines), but it just so happens that my wisdom tooth (on the same side) was coming out. I've since gotten it removed and it seems to have helped.

I suffer from migraines,Since I was In middle school but as I got older they had worsen along with that so has my vitiligo. I take Exedrin Migraine also alot and it never really worked for me anyways so maybe there is something to your theory. I have them almost every other day. And it sure seems like I find another white spot everyday also. It is only getting worse too. So if your theory has any truth to it. My body is going be coverd sooner or later becuase my migraines will not stay away no matter what I take. Very good theory thanks for that input!
I think i kinda see where you are coming from, ive tried connecting so many dots to find out some kind of connection between my vitiligo and some other health or enviromental problems that may have cause it. I am 26 and didnt start losing any pigmentation until I was about 23 and when it got worst was about a year and a half ago and it spread rapidly over a large amount of body. I have always suffered from depression and axienty since i was very young but the vitilgo spread like crazy when i was going through the most difficult time in my life and when i got the vitiligo on my face my depression and self asteem got extremly worse. The other day I noticed some pigment came back on the bridge of my nose. I was beginning to think that all the pigment i lost was never coming back. It could be just some random thing but one major thing that has changed in my life is i have been in counseling and taking medication to cope with my depression and anxiety. I'm not saying that is the answer for you or anyone else but I really think there is a strong corelation between emotional pain and stress or something like migrains and vitigo. I think our minds have a huge effect on are body and Vitiligo has been extremely tramatic for me. I wont leave my house without wearing makeup and will only let very few people see me with it off. I appreciate your post. It feels comforting to know there are other people going through the same struggle as me.
For me, I had really awful migraines when I was a child that lasted about a week and I had about 4 or 6 each year. My vitiligo showed up shortly after my last migraine. I didn't take any high strength pain killers as I was so young. Maybe it was the stress of the migraines that triggered my vit?? Interesting...
Interesting... I was thinking that maybe taking Excedrin is what may have caused it. But I have too many possibilities up in the air. As we all know, taking nothing for a migraine is not an option. For a while I was on Imitrex but I didn't like the way they made me feel so I stopped taking them
Hey Olivia! Interesting theory. I can't say mine were caused by migraines, as I got vit when I was 5. I have been suffering from severe migraines for the last 2 years, and even though I haven't noticed any new vitiligo on neck, or side that my migraines occur I will keep a sharp eye out for anything new.
I'd get those migraines looked at and maybe look into chiropractic and massage, I was suffering from mine once a week like clock work, and doing a treatment of massage and chiro has reduced them to once a month and at least 3/4 the severity.

Good luck on the way to pain free! It's rough :(
