I recently had blood work done. My doctor called me in because the results showed that I have severe Vit D deficiency. He prescribed Vit D supplements. I know because of the vitiligo I haven't been going out as much as I used to. However, I do eat all the food supposedly rich in D.
A thought came to me. Could vitiligo be the body's response to being deficient in Vit D? The doc said and I also read that Vit D deficiency is more prevalent in darker skinned people and people in areas where they are not exposed to sunlight as much (winter months). Could the body be removing pigment so that the skin can produce vitamin D? I am a 56 year old African American female. I have had vit for about 20 years now. I retired in 2008 and I realized I have not been going out as much as I used to. My vit has also escalated.
Just wondering....

hehe. My viti got triggered by Vit.D intake. Went for normal physical. Dr prescribed Vitd. 5000iu for 4 months.
On month 2, started having huge panic attacks and fainting spells, then came huge hunger cravings even after eating a huge meal. Then came mood swings and muscle spasms and twitching all over my body. Then *exual problems. My legs used to feel stiff all the time. One day all of a sudden i felt like i didnt exist in this world but i was still here.
I am not against Vit. D supplements, just that for some it might help and for some it might create havoc. All i am saying is if there is safe natural way of getting it, avoid pills
Was diagnosed POTS in month 3. google it.
Apparently Vit. D messed up my brain neurotransmitters really bad and was under ultra high stress during this. The only positive thing was i had ultra high energy and could run all day long without tiring.
Month 4 all of a sudden white spots started appearing on my face and fingers. Doctors could not explain the symptoms and didnt think Vit. D to be the cause. I stopped taking Vit. D and in about 2-3 weeks, all the symptoms went away except the white spots :(
In my experience most of docs are idiots, in this world they just recommend pills without understanding how my body would react to it. Human body is programmed to get VIt. D via sunlight/skin where it is regulated and not via mouth where there is no regulation.
VIt. D really *ucked up my body. Of course, other people might not be affected by VIt. D, it all depends on your body. Everybody is different.
Anyhow after 1 year after this, with proper uvb/protopic treatment my spots on neck/face completely went away in 2 month and haven't come back in about 10 months.
Now just waiting for spots on fingers/lips to go.
FYI:Vit D is not considered to e a VItamin but actually is a steroid hormone and is very dangerous if not taken in appropriate dosage which ofcourse no one knows but your body. Hence please get it from your skin/sunlight which is natural way of body regulating it.
Just sharing my experience.

Siddharth..Thanks for sharing ur exprience ...all drugs / supplments may have side effect for some ppl ...as you say vitaminD is accually a hormone ..we can get it from diet too ...the best is natural way from sun or diet.D
There is proof that Vitamin D works. A study was done and the results are here http://www.landesbioscience.com/journals/dermatoendocrinology/artic...
My daughter is taking Vitamin D supplements and eating good food and the vitiligo is almost all gone now.

Although, I remember reading about this quite sometime ago, did not give much importance to it. Plus, our Derm never suggested this. We will schdule a blood test to evaluate vit d status.
