Hi,

For those of you doing narrowband UV treatment...  Are you supposed to let the vit areas turn pink?  Or does that mean you have done too much and you should reduce the uv exposure?

My 13yo daughter has vit on her forehead, eyebrow and eyelid.  I was treating it as one area (while covering the rest of her face).  But now we need to treat them as separate areas since the skin on the eyelid is much thinner and sensitive and burns faster than her forehead.

We have an appt with a dermatologist at the end of Aug.  For now, we are going vigilante on the vitiligo!  Thanks for sharing your experiences!

  • my son has vitiligo on his eyes, knees, and small spots several other places... eyes respond fastest to UVB but u have to be very careful...  if it gets really dark pink it could turn into a rash.. u shoudl never increase the dosage time if it went pink... infact reduce it by a few seconds if it was really dark.. otherwise stick to the same.. i have been using UVB for myself for long time but stopped recently so i have a good idea of how to judge the dosage
  • Yes! pink is good! not red. pink is the goal to bring back the pigment.
  • Follow up...  We saw the dermatologist yesterday.  (We live in the USA.  I bought a UVB lamp from Australia without a Rx and have been using it on my daughter for 3 months now--she is 13 and has vit on her forehead and eyelid).  The derm used a Wood's lamp---and we saw that there IS repigmentation on my daugter's vit spots--freckles of repigmentation.  I thought it was working but the Woods lamp confirmed.  The derm was concerned about treating the eyelid with UVB---normally they require the eyes to be covered for protection. Otherwise, she said to continue what we are doing b/c it is working!

The derm said that it is good if the skin gets a little bit pink after treatment but to be very careful not to blister.

    • Hello!

My daughter is 3 years old and she has vit on her forehead down to her left eye and nose and down to the left side of the mouth. We've been doing the laser treatment and we have big improvements but I'm tired of going there all the time for 3 times a week. So would u mind give me some info on this UVB lamp that u have.

The excimer laser that we're using gives also uvb light so I guess ur lamp would be harmless with no after second effect like skin cancer or anything. Please tell me about it and include the price, location, where to buy it etc...

      Thank you

      • Gail---does your daughter wear eye protection during laser treatment?  How do you handle that when the vitilgo is on the eyelid?  We are treating my daughter's eyelid--trying to place a goggle over her eye lashes only but still exposing her eyelid.  The doctor recommends to not treat the eyelid.  Her eyelid was the first area to repigment.

        Thanks!

        • She wear the goggles when the doctors does the forehead, nose near mouth etc. and when she does the eyelid and under she takes the goggle off and my daughter just closes her eyes and sometimes the dr. puts her fingers on both eyes just to make sure that she closes them but she's used to it now

If you want to see her pictures, I have put some in a discussion that I posted yesterday with subject "Hello"

      • We got the Dermaray from Australia (since we did not have an Rx at the time).  Please google it for more info.  Ask your doctor for a script and maybe your insurance will cover it.  If you live in the USA, you can get them locally but only with a Rx.  An Rx is not needed in Australia.
    • Regina how long does your daughter go under the lamp for each time? my lamp says not to go abover 60 seconds a time
      • We started with 30 seconds on her forehead and eyelid (simultaneously).  We increased by 15 second increments until she started getting pink.  Now we treat the forehead and the eyelid separately since the eyelid burns sooner.  We are up to 2:00 minutes on the forehead and 1:15 minutes on the eyelid.  She has had a total of twelve treatments.  She gets pink at with that amount of light so that is as high as we will go with the treatment time.

I took a piece of cardboard and made a cut out to place over her face during treatment---to protect the rest of her face.

  • I'm not too sure about that, cause i have not dont the light thing yet, but right now i'm using creams, i went to the derm and my spots were pink cause i stay in the son alot, and the derm told me that that was good cause it shows that there is still pigment left, if your really worried, call her dermatologist
