Hey everyone! So I've heard that there is a connection between Vitiligo and thyroid problems. Last year my blood test showed that I had a high ANA count, now this year my thyroid is all wacky. I have hyperthyroidism. I haven't seen the specialist yet, so I don't know what the specific are. I see the specialist on the 25th. I was wondering if any of you also have thyroid problems. It would seem as though once you start taking medication for your thyroid your Vit would start repigmenting. Wishful thinking? Yes! Thank everybody.

Hi Amanda,I strongly believe that vitiligo is just an other side of some problem in organism. I also had very high ANA count. Regarding my research, this ANA test is not 100% accurate.
Before I got vitiligo I had systemic candidiasis together with celiac disease, also there is a high risk that I have pernicious anemia (still not diagnosed, but according to symptoms doctors have doubt on it, so I need to do some analasys,to prove their doubts).I am almost sure that those things triggered my vitiligo... I would recomend everyone with vitiligo, to do complete body screening, especialy if some other isssues beside vitiligo are present.
I have heard about that I did a little research on thyroid I have all the symptoms of it but haven't gone to the dr yet and I believe they said its due to stress or hereditary idk could be a number of things I think that's how I got my vitiligo
Both conditions, hyperthyroidism and vitiligo have autoimmune causes which would act as the common link between the two. However; in treating the first conditions, I would assume that there is not direct link on treating the second.
I've had vitiligo since I was 10. It went away with protopic treatments, sun, and tanning. At age 25 the vitiligo began to spread again and I was also diagnosed with hypothyroid. Debbie, you are correct - They are connected in that they are both autoimmune (which usually come together.. as do "unusual hives") However one does not cause the other nor will treating one treat the other... unfortunately! I wish my thyroid medicine cleared up my zit!
I have vitiligo and my thyroid was checked once when i got it and and recently (2 years later) and still no thyroid problems. My doctor said sometimes the thyriod problems activate vitiligo, i guess just not in my case...
As a sufferer of hypothyroidism for almost 13 years now, I can tell you I had thyroid problems way before any spots ever showed up. I have been taking levothyroxin and have my TSH levels checked every six months, so unfortunately it is wishful thinking that your vit will re pigment.
Hopefully you can be an exception to the rule though :)
Hi Amanada I have a Thyroid Problem since 20 years and Take medication and Taking the medication Thyroxine doesnt help repigment your VIT , However it may slow the process down. All i know VIT is a side affect of the Thyroid problem im my case .
For me, it was wishful thinking - but everyone is different. I had Hashimotos disease (underactive) which is also an autoimmune disease. Seems like if you have one autoimmune, it's likely you will have another. I was taken of of my Synthroid in )ctober of 2011 for testing on my thyroid. During the time that I was off of my Snythroid I had a severe case of hives (urticaria) and facial swelling (angioadema). I have had hives ever since to varying degrees. It has gotten much better lately, after I put myself on a low histamine diet - didn't know some foods naturallly contain histamine! And none of my doctors mentioned it either!! Anyway, I have not seen any difference. I started on Synthroid in August of 2010. My thyroid was removed in January of this year - good luck to you and keep us posted!! I'd love to see a success story!!!
Hi i have the same problems Vitiligo - 80-90 percent of white skin , Underactive thyroid possibly autoimmune but never tested for that, urticaria , angioedema for the past 3 years . I have noticed that my thyroxine pills help control the "allergy" symptoms.... I wonder if we share a common gene ?
I went to the specialist today and he was very shocked to see that my thyroid looks good. He said that my thyroid is probably fluctuating but that I don't need medication yet. So that is good news but I will always have to keep an eye on it and get tested every year or six months.
