Tanning Lotion

Hey Guys,

I took someone's advice(I think in this group) and tried using Jergens Natural Glow lotion.
I have been using it for 4 days on my neck and arms(day and night) and it is actually tanning the vit skin. It is very subtle but it has toned down the stark vit whiteness against my brown skin. I got the Jergens medium to tan. That is the only one they had. I was wondering if they had dark to chocolate. Probably not...
I always wear mock turtle necks even in the summer. My neck is almost all white. I have stopped wearing the mock necks and hoped the lotion would tone down the whiteness. It did. There is still a big contrast between parts of my face and neck. Anyway, just thought I would share that.

  • I've used the Jergens Natural Glow as well. Most of my vitligo is on my arms and hands, around my pelivs and the tops of my thighs. I have noticed, too, that the sunless tanning lotions do take the edge off the whiteness of the spots, so I have become more comfortable wearing tank tops in the summer.. I'm still pretty self conscious in a swimming suit, though, and usually wear a one piece with a pair of shorts. I appreciate Nelly's comment about it thinning the skin. I wasn't aware that sunless tanning lotions could do this. I think I am going to do some searching for the products that Ali Marie suggested.

Thank you, friends, for all of your posts!
  • You might try using Olay's version (I think it's called Touch of Sun).I found that the Jergen's gave me more of a yellow-ish tint (almost like iodine), while Olay gave me more of a bronze-y tint.

Clarin's makes an awesome self tanning milk. It's pricey, but gentler on the skin and gives more dramatic results than the Olay or Jergen's. That I would recommend for the neck/face issue.
  • I used sunless tanning lotions on my hands and elbows to hide my Vitiligo for many years and it worked well to make my arms and hands look like I did not have Vitiligo, instead it looked like I had an uneven suntan. Since I live in Fl, it is common for people to naturally have uneven suntans so it was hard for others to notice that I had Vitiligo.

I recently stopped using the products since my entire hands are now de-pigmented and now I wear long sleeve lightweight t-shirts for casual wear or long sleeve blazers for work, to hide the problem.

However, I have found that repeated use of these products over the years has thinned out the skin on my hands and now I get paper cuts very easily. So, I feel that while sunless tanning lotions can benefit people with Vitiligo, repeated use (as in my case) can cause the skin to thin out.

Just thought I would let you know what may happen with repeated use.
    • Hi Nelly,

Thanks so much for the info. I will try to limit my use.
  • I also find that the gradual tanning products minimise the contrast between vit and normal skin even when applied all over. I have also tried applied it to the patches only with a make-up brush but this has gone wrong before and is only for the very patient!! Woop for you - buh bye turtle necks!!
