This question has been on my mind since I first got vitiligo almost 30 years ago, so should I assume that my vitiligo comes from my fathers side of the family since vitiligo runs in families and we get our blood type from our fathers. then again what if vitiligo runs in both families these are some of the questions that I used to ponder

It is noted that Vitiligo often occurs after stressful events or severe injury. They say it can happen at any age (including infants). Clinical analysis has proved that there is an accumulation of hydrogen peroxide in the skin. This finding has led doctors to recently develop a treatment called psuedocatalase (catalase breaks down H202 into water) combined with UVB treatment. It appears to be successful at inducing repigmentation. Other methods include topical steroids and PUVA. Of course, none of these treatments address the underlying cause.I'm going to talk to my dermatologist at my next appointment too discuss and relationship to our blood types from our fathers and our vitiligo because I do believe it's something worth mentioning don't you ????

  • I have Vitiligo from my mother's side of the family. There are three of us from that side of the family that have Vitiligo.
    • I never knew my biological father so I know nothing about his side but on my mothers side there was never any mention of anyone with vitiligo that's why I wonder if it's from his side of the family

      • Check on your mother's side for any of the other auto-immune diseases. I am the first that we know of on either side to have Vitiligo, but not the first auto-immune.
  • vit should be auto-immune disorder, there are few people affected that when he was born...
Nongenetic risk factors like bad dietary habit, severe injury, unhealthful environment and bad mood may most likely to casue vitiligo. Once infected, keep yourself in good mood can avoid to worst result. Take every opportunity to cure by means of phototherapy tech.

  • Hmm. Blood type and vitiligo are controlled by completely different factors. I haven't seen any scientific literature that points to vitiligo being inherited from the father's side. I could be missing some info out there about that though.

In fact, the mitochondria is strictly passed only from mother to child, the father has got nothing to do with that. The one thing that only a father can pass along is a Y chromosome, as far as I'm aware. However blood type and immune responses involves genes from both parents.
    • Yes I agree with you about the father passing the Y chromosome but so much genetic information is in the blood line and that's what we get from our fathers but what if vitiligo is on both sides of the family wouldn't it make the vitiligo trait a dominate one Ax Lady (By the way how did you come up with such a horrific screen name........lol )

      • No, genetic dominance does not relate to frequency, it only refers to prevailing phenotype. Vitiligo could be caused by any number of genetic factors which could be recessive. I'm not able to make any sense of the idea that it's something only the father can pass down when both genders manifest the condition equally. If there are genetic variations that are X-linked, then actually that puts the onus on the mothers in the case of males because that's where they get their only X chromosome from.

BTW, my username is not "Ax Lady", but AX Woman, which carries a special personal meaning to me. :-)
  • ok... thats 2 to 2. two maternal, two paternal. NEXT??
