Protopic/Spicy Food

Hello Everyone, I have been using protopic for a little over a month on my face, and I have noticed a weird side effect. Whenever I eat spicy food the areas where I have applied the protopic on my face becomes really REALLY red, like an allergic reaction. It itches a bit as well, and goes away within minutes once I stop eating the food. I have NO other side effects such as sneezing or shortness of breath, tingling etc. I have eaten spicy food ALL my life, since birth and never had this reaction. The foods in question aren't even that spicy compared to my normal level of spiciness. The foods that I have noticed it with are a medium thai curry sauce, el pollo loco's pico salsa, and turkey kielbasa. I am very hopeful that I will not have this reaction to wasabi because if so people are just going to have to stare at the radioactive girl, I will not give up wasabi! Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks! kris

  • hi kris,.

i get the same result when i  have a drink. all the spots where i applied it, starts turning red and it burns. it would take about 10 minutes before the simptons go away

    • I had the same but I kept up the protopic and the wine and eventually it stopped!

  • I have been feeling either hot ot cold with protopic and feel very tired and sleepy...Alcohol and eating hot stuff with protopic has similar effect- not visibly red but feeling very hot . Do you get red in other circumstances ?
    • is it normal to feel warmth on my face using protopic? what should i do? do i have to lessen the amount upon applying?

      • i dont get red but i feel so warm..

  • I noticed spicy foods and alcohol made the treated areas itchy and hot, but only on the spot near my eye.
    • noticed it with alcohol but not food. i kept the alcohol and shot away the protopic.

      =)
    • Hi Mary,

I dont notice it with wine, how weird!

I have been really impressed with the protopic. I am seeing spots in all of the white spots on my face and since it's been such a short time I am feeling really positive about it. I am also doing the B12, ginkgo biloba, folic acid.

I am sure every derm or doctor would tell you this is bad to do but I didnt really notice any freckling of pigment until i started getting in the sun.I apply sunscreen everywhere on my face that still has pigment, but the protopic on my white spots and sit out in the morning sun for 15 minutes a few times a week.

On the other hand i am noticing freckling in spots that I am not putting protopic on and that are not getting the sun (as I am not comfortable going pantless even in my own backyard! ;-)). Who can tell? Maybe I am repigmenting just through sheer power of will at this point?

      thanks for your reply!

      • I forgot to add that I have not changed my diet at all, except not eating any more mangoes. I had never eaten a mango in my life until this summer, and had one or two a day and then I noticed my vit.

I eat pretty clean, and I work out like a fiend and always have. I eat a diet high in low fat protein, lower on the carb side, and get my fats primarily from good sources. I love veg and fruits.

But i also have a glass of wine most nights, and on the weekends I drink a STRONG margarita at night.
