Other skin problems

Hi all, I am wondering if there are people who, next to Vitiligo, also have other skin diseases. My problem is that I have vitiligo over my whole body plus a mild form of Hidradenitis Suppurativa wich is completely different and lot more painful than vitiligo (maybe for that reason that I do not mind the depigmentation as much as other people). I just want to know if vitiligo alters your body (besides the skin of course), or maybe the other way around. grtz Sander

  • Hi Sander - I have Halo Nevus and have had it since I was a child. Halo Nevus never bothered me, it's just where I get a white circle around a mole and then the mole goes away and i have a white circle for a while that eventually repigments. My body has been doing this for years and I always liked my halo nevus because I decided it was my body removing a mole that could be dangerous (cancerous). But then i got vitiligo on my face, and hands and they say that if you get halo nevus you are likely to get vitiligo. Sigh. ;-)
  • Hey Sander, I've got a few skin issues along side Vitiligo. Morphea (just more darker spots) and Eczema which flares up with food allergies and intolerance's. Like you Vit doesn't seem as big a deal to me as eczema is more painful and harder to control, and it destroys more pigment. Do you find your other skin conditions make you loose more pigment, since it's typical to lose pigment when you heal.
  • Just had the results for my bloodtest I took for eventual problems of the thyriod, everything is normal... well normal, still got two skin pbms... :)
  • I also suffer from Rosacea however I hardly notice it because the Vitiligo is the worst condition of the two.
  • Hi Sander

Vitiligo has been seen in conjunction with other auto-immune disorders. Lots of people just have vitiligo without any other health issues. I don't know that vitiligo alters your body (other than the skin pigment change) but there might be something going on in the body that has altered it and started the vitiligo. I have started a regimen of minerals and vitamins as people with vitiligo are often low in things like B12 and Folic Acid. Also am taking minerals to kickstart the creation of anti-oxidants as people with vitiligo are often low in catalase which helps rid the body of hydrogen peroxide, which is a waste created by the body and has been found to be high in some people that have this disease. Lots of things to consider!
    • Hi Linda, that's interesting about the catalase - not heard about that before although I'd heard about higher levels of hydrogen peroxide in the skin of vitiligo sufferers. Do you have any more info on this, or maybe you could point me to where you found out about this? cheers, Gem :)

Sander, the only things I've noticed so far are an eczema-like condition on my hands and arms, and possibly a gluten sensitivity. Hope that's all I ever have to deal with! Best of luck with treatment/cures...
