hi,
my daughter 5yrs old is suffering with vitiligo from the past 1 year... she has spots around ankle, near left eye and on the both legs in symmetrical pattern. currently we are using unani medicine (from crium hyderabad), though there was a small betterment in existing patches, but there are many new ones popping up .. apart from unani medicine we are currently using elocon as an external application once in 3 days.
i am very much worried about the side effects these steroid creams might cause..
can anyone suggest me with a better treatments which are especially helpful to children with vitiligo?

I am a 27 years old female and have had vitiligo since I was 22. I have tried every type of treatment out there, spent ridiculous amounts of time, energy and money on them. Unfortunately, all unsuccessfully. The best thing I can tell you to do for your daughter is to empower her and teach her to love herself just the way she is. From my own experience, the best treatment is confidence and self acceptance. I found that trying treatment after treatment was taking more of an emotional toll on me than it was worth. It made me more depressed and upset that I had vitiligo because it made me focus on it and the fact that instead of going away it was spreading. I think at 5 years old the mental impact of trying treatment after treatment to try to get rid of it is going to have long term, damaging effects. Personally, I think it will make her feel that something is wrong with her and that the vitiligo is something that has to go away before she is adequate. I honestly think the best thing you can do is teach her that she is perfect just the way she is. Use it as a way to help her celebrate her differences that make her unique. It is also a great way to teach her to have compassion towards other people that might have conditions, appearances or disabilities that make them different from 'normal' people.
Best of luck,
Layla
I agreed with that too, but as a parent you have to make decisions for an other person, and it's surely not easy. We really considered doing nothing else other than making sure our daughter feels good about being different. But you always in the back of your mind have a little voice saying, what if something can help our child to get rid of her vitiligo, and what if we do nothing about it and in few years from now, she is asking us why we didn't work on it at the very beginning?
The fact is, there is success stories out there, and we just decided to at least try something and see if it's works. Anyway on a kids you don't have that many safe options, but it's really hard to just looking at the vitiligo taking over your kid.
Sure thing is you have to be careful by choosing the right words, and not acting like vitiligo is the end of the world, because it's not!
That's excellent advice. How did you manage to truly love yourself and the condition? I'm still working through that x
I hope you will find something who will help your child,
Annie
Hi Annie,
Thank you for your reply. Good to know that your daughter is repigmenting. my dermatologist is suggesting Dexamethasone tabs and UVB. we are not considering steroids now, thinking to start UVB. We are also trying to figure out what is the internal trigger,no clue yet... :( we have tested her for celiac, thyroid, vitamin levels ..etc everything is normal .
please share the steroid name you have used .
wishing your child all the very best in her treatment.!!
thanks,
Babu
We are seeing a pediatric dermatologist who is very dedicated to respond to all our questions. I was very hesitant to start steroid at first but she reassures me. We are seeing her every 4 weeks, so my daughter is on a very close watch. The steroid we are using right now is Fluocinonide 0.05%. We won't use it in a long run for sure, but since my daughter is not cover with vitiligo and the patches are small, is not a problem to use it as a topical cream.
