Hi all,

I have two daughters (aged 9 and 10) with Vitiligo and am trying to figure out what there triggers are ....  I know triggers can be foods, hormones, stress, an injury, etc.  One daughter also has Hashimoto's and once we got her on meds, it seemed like her Vit calmed down (mostly white eyelids) and helped with Protopic.  Just in the last days, however, her eyes have gone white again :(  She has suddenly been eating a lot of yogurt in the last week.  My question is can the trigger make the skin react in a matter of days or hours?  Does anyone have any experience with this?  Thank you!  Sonia

  • Wheat is not healthy for most people in the world , it makes them weak . You dont have to necessarely have autoimmune reaction but gluten makes most people weak and kids growing like weeds actually means they grow weak . I was an amazing world class soccer player as a teen but i was weak .

When some people turned from hunting to growing wheat they became taller and weaker and the ones who kept hunting were shorter but stronger and would attack and rob wheat farmers ...thats why nowadays most vicious criminals are almost always short and bulky not tall and thin .

  • Greetings to you Sonia and to your respective family members in the precious name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Just massage with good quality of coconut oil, I am sure, you will find good results . It is one of the ancient techniques for vitiligo treatment.

    God bless you

    • Hi Srinivas,

Has coconut oil helped you with your Vitiligo?

        Srinivas

      • its true that coconut oil is widely used in India and the phillipines in both cooking for body care.

It might be something worthwhile to try.  but again I would try using it on an unexposed area - one spot for a few days and see what response there is.  coconuts are great for health in general but you want to make sure that the body is not allergic to coconuts.

organic coconut oil and aloe vera from the plant leaves ( they are available everywhere these days) are both great things to be used topically.

    • Thank you.  I will try to do that.  I have also incorporated coconut oil in my cooking in place of butter.

  • sometimes hours......she may be allergic to diary.

autoimmune disease in children this age is usually bought about by allergic reactions.

did you get her tested for allergies?  i would go to a children's hospital wherer they have a good allergy department or a very good private allergist.

I have been reading that kids this age...its typically bought about by food allergies...wheat and diary are the biggest culprits...typically...it may even be nuts.

    • Normally deportation comes gradually and it is very individual , as Shifa says if some one is allergic to some thing it may occur fast but Im not sure if it comes within hours it may occur within few days, the fastest I herd is one day or after 24 hours that is  when ppl face emotional shock like near and beloved family death ,car accident and other shocking incidents like being accused for some ting you didn`t do and going to prison....These kind of  incidents affect only us who are predisposed for vitiligo.

Otherwise dont think always about food is maybe a trigger researchers say that there is no proof that any diet is connected to vitligo..Yogurt is even advised for vitiligo coz it is good source of Probiotics I dont think regular consuming is a trigger..too much of every thing is not good any way.

It is not that much easy to depigment either ask the people who want to depig by drug it take several month or years to depigment fully.

If yogurt is a trigger 2% of ppl in Turkey could have been full of vitiligo.. ..it is tradition to drink yogort after meal, some drink it for thirsty by mixing it with water

Dont stress children about meal let them eat what they want as long as they are not allergic and it is normal intake not too much ..the only known trigger is stress...for some ppl the time they change diet and stress about food that makes vitiligo go wild..

Try to live health by eating variety. ..we need all vitamins and minerals...check vitamin b12,b6 and D3 leavel, most of us we used to be deficient for these vitamins...when you take B12 take folic acid beside..for best advice talk to ur doctor and take blood test.

      Good luck!

      • @ Bamsegutt...I definitely appreciate your remarks.

However, one key point is to remember is that yogurt is not harmful. It is good just like wheat generally is not a harmful for 90 percent of the people in the world.  all around the  world most diets are based on wheat and diary.  Kids are fed these things and many grow like weeds on them.  So the problem is not yogurt, wheat, nuts or fish.  generally these are VERY VERY healthy and nutrient dense foods.  However as you know vitiligo is rather rare affecting only 1 to 2 percent of the population.  there is something in ppl with vit that cannot process these things.  sometimes your body has no problems for years and then all of sudden it develops an allergy.  Most likely genetic predisposition is the cause.

So dear forum members a food item can be the healthiest food on earth but if YOUR PARTICULAR body cannot tolerate or process a certain type of food then its NOT HEALTY FOR you.  It doesn't matter if it is considered healthy for 98 percent of the population.  That's why its important to pay particular attention to your own body and here you have to be cautious with advice of most doctors.  they will tell what's good for the general population and not necessarily for your case.

I will tell one experience....as a child I absolutely loved chocolate.  but I noticed that I would get pimples whenever i ate it.  the dermatologists i visited all said chocolate doesn't cause pimples/acne...its usually hormones. I read numerous things that said chocolate DOESN'T CAUSE PIMPLES.  However,,,lo and behold each and every time i ate chocolate I would get some very ugly pimples.  I didn't like those pimples but I loved chocolate.  anyways...after a while i decided that my love for chocolate wasn't as great as my hate for pimples.  So I gave up chocolate and my skin looked better.

My advice would be for Sonia and all other forum members listen to your body.  its unique and what works for the vast majority may or may not apply to you.In the case of vitiligo its hard when people read that such and such worked for a particular person and then try it and find it out it didn't work for them.  case in point is gingko biloboa.  Some people swear by it while others say that it worsened their vitiligo and caused more spreading.

Lets say you are allergic to wheat or diary or xyz.....I don't think that just using gingko biloboa , homeopathy or ayuvdea will work in your case alone especially if the bulk of your diet consists of those things.  its important to remove the allergen first and then use something complementary.

from what I have understood treating vitiligo is highly individual and REQUIRES PATIENCE and diligence of sherlock holmes.  you need to be a sherlock holmes type and RESEARCH, CONSTANTLY EVALUATE AND be vigilant.

at the same time I do agree with bamsegutt, Sonia you cannot police your child 24/7.  You can definitely control what you bring into your house but constant obsession over the disease will definitely have a negative impact on you and your child (it is easier said than done).

keep your daughters busy in other activities and let them be children.  remember vitiligo is not fatal nor is it painful physically.

We should continue to be proactive, research and believe that we have control over this disorder.

        best of luck.

        • Hi Shifa, Bamsegutt,  For what it is worth I have been seeing a nutritionist who specializes in managing autoimmune disease through nutrition.   I am still trying understand what this all means and do not want to make any strong statements, since I have no evidence of what does and does not work (at least for us).  She is strongly encouraging me and my family to be gluten-free, which we have done.  She also is suggesting we avoid dairy products, as they too are hard to digest and inflammatory.  She talks about cleaning the liver and repairing/protecting the gut, and how certain foods can do wonders.  For example consuming garlic can help your body expel toxins, especially metals.   She also says it is important to get their diet under control before puberty, as hormones can make managing Vitiligo difficult.

Since we have gone gluten-free my girls are now eating salads at school lunch instead of bread and noodles.  Their taste buds seem to be changing for the better.  They also seem to have more energy.  I will now wean out milk products (what animals feed they young milk after infancy?), I have read that calcium, etc can be found in other foods.  I think I will have to let them have the occasional ice cream or whatever, but removing dairy as much as possible can't hurt.

That's my 2 cents worth.  Like one of you said, we all need to do our own research and take charge of our family's health.
