Experience with early stage vitiligo in the ear

All:

I would like to learn if anyone used Protopic or other ointment for vitiligo in the ear.  If yes, pl narrate your experiences/suggestions/opinion/comments/advise. We will be seeing our derm in a couple of weeks from now.

Since we found success with protopic plus mild steroid on other parts of the body for my 9 year old, I am simply guessing that, same treatment should work. We are certainly hoping for it.

Thanks a bunch in advance.

  • Another Update. After 8 months of protopic usage, from next month, Derm advised to reduce protopic from 7 days a week to 2 days a week. In one ear, pigmentation is back 100%. In another ear, i would say, 95% pigmentation is back.

I cannot wait to come bakc and say that, we stopped medicine in the ear.

Jan 1, 2011...may be ? Very happy for now.
  • i'm thinking that from what i've been reading on here, it doesnt make a difference WHERE on your body you put it because it goes into your blood stream and works on whatever area it want to. so you can put it on you body, and it might affect your face, etc...
if i'm wrong, i'm sure someone will correct me.
  • I forgot can the protopic be used only on the face
    • from all i've been reading Protopic works best on face, slower on hands, feet, elbows, knees.

if the one u used burned, it might be too high a percentage. i've herd people using 20%, 10% and 5%. whci hone were u using? talk to your derm about a lesser dosage.

  • Ive never personally used it i know someone who did and she said it worked well for her
    • William, no the vit is never cured but you might be able to get rid of spots as they occur throughout your life. Even as I am treating areas, I see new ones coming up, especially as I live on a farm and am unable to stay indoors so that I won't tan. Every day is a real treat (not really) as I discover more areas that are beginning to depigment. However, as I said before, the areas that are more recently depigmenting are the ones that I have seen responding to the Protopic so I just add the new areas to my regimen when I am applying the Protopic. As for the risks, Protopic is actually not a vit treatment but is for eczema. It is only by chance that someone discovered that it works for vit on some people. There are a lot of people, all over the world that are using this product. Anyway, I will keep y'all updated. I see the Derm on September 7 and am hoping she thinks I should continue with Protopic.
      • Thanks Linda and yes please keep me updated!
        • Just an update on my protopic treatment. I am repigmenting a little bit on almost all my spots. The only place not yet responding are my wrists. Even my feet and hands are getting tiny freckles. My derm has renewed my prescription and is quite positive about my results. However, I am still getting new spots so this will be a lifelong battle. It should be fun (not!) next summer when I get the inevitable tan and see where I have lost pigment and didn't know it. I wasn't feeling well and was concerned it was the flu side effect that you can get with protopic but it turned out I probably did have the flu. Ha. If the repigmenting continues I will post before and after pics in a couple of months.
          • Linda: I am sooooo glad to see your response. Very happy to know that your derm is positive about your results. The thought of lifelong battle with the new spots, is depressing. But, as long as we get positive results, I guess, we just have to learn to deal. Just stay positive, keep applying protopic. Hopefully, it works in your favor on every spot.

From our side, with regard to this particular discussion thread (vit inside of ears), protopic is helping us. Being inside of the ear, exposure to sun is not possible easily. I can say that, more than 50% if the vit area got re-pigmented. Hopefully, we will achieve success on the remaining area. Will update with complete results in December.
