Eating Disorder and Vitiligo .

This is kinda random and I have no idea if my eating disorder and my vit could correlate/affect one another so im wondering if any of you have ideas as to why this might be happening .

Okay I had an eating disorder for 2 years , it got pretty bad and I almost died a few times .

Anyways im finally succeeding in recovery .

One thing ive noticed is that during my eating disorder my vitiligo literally didn't spread at all .

And now that im recovering ( almost 3 months into full on recovery ! ) my vitiligo is getting active and im getting new spots , fast . Its making recovery a lot harder .

Do any of you have any idea why this could be happening ?

  • Im gunna start taking vitamin B complex , a multivitamin and maybe gingko but probably not since it seems to work against some of us . And im thinking trying gluten free and decreasing dairy .

Im pretty sure I have a horrible vitiligo diet now that I think of it bc I eat Oatmeal , fruit , almonds , eggs , lean proteins , yogurt , brown rice ,  cottage cheese and protein shakes . It varies daily but its always some mix of those foods .

I still really think this has something to do with my Thyroid tho bc during my E.D I was having seizures due to my metabolic rate changing and apparently the thyroid controls metabolic rate !

Im getting so much information on google that it gets confusing so hearing suggestions/thoughts from you guys  is helpful !

    • Yes you are right, your thyroid could definitely be an issue. Sea vegetables (dulse, nori, wakame, and kelp) are VERY good for your thyroid.

I just bough a really good book about autoimmune disease called The Immune Sytem Recovery Plan by Susan Blum, M.D. that you might want to check out. She talks about the thyroid and I think it could really help you put all of the pieces together, it really helped me. Sometimes Google can be both a blessing and a curse because there is SO much information.

I also really like http://DrBenKim.com and http://DrHyman.com. Both focus on autoimmune disease and help you figure out how to heal yourself.

Don't give up, and congratulations on overcoming your E.D. I know that must have been quite difficult :).

      • Tawny, I like how you're as knowledgeable if not more than me!! Everything starts in the gut. Agreed? Many things can cause intestinal permeability and when that happens.. endless list of problems can occur. Heal the gut.. heal your life.. I've, like you done a share of research. Sorry if I'm not making as much sense as I should. I'm kind of drunk stranded an hour away from home lol ahh I know you get it
        • LOL, yeah I get what you are saying. You are absolutely right! How is the Paleo going for you? Did it stop your vit from spreading? Have you seen any repigmentation?

  • Food allergy has a lot to do with vitiligo. The fact that your vitiligo stopped when you weren't eating  and is spreading since you have been eating, is a huge clue that there may be some sort of a food allergy or intolerance.

Also, all autoimmune disease, specifically vitiligo, has been shown to be aggravated by animal protein. Those of us with vitiligo seem to have low stomach acid and the inability to digest and break down proteins completely. This leads to inflammation and can aggravate (and cause) leaky gut.

If you have leaky gut (and don't know it) and you continue to eat protein, those undigested protein molecules can leak through your gut wall and into your blood stream. Your body then sees the undigested protein as a foreign invader and begins attacking it. This leads to inflammation and an autoimmune response. For more information on this, read this article http://drbenkim.com/autoimmune-illness-natural-treatment.htm.

If I were you, I might try eliminating (or at least greatly reducing) all animal protein, including dairy. Just make sure that you eat plenty of veggies, fruits, nuts, and whole grains. You may also need to get a good multivitamin and/or consider taking extra B vitamins and folate. Check with your doctor before you make this change though.

    HTH!

  • I'm not sure how old you are.  But my vitiligo started in grade school - but hardly noticeable.  Except I had some gray (white) hair that my school friends started commenting about. My mom used to color my hair.  In HS, my vitiligo really started to spread.... arm pits, forearms, then later hands, feet and knees.  I followed the same diet for decades....the standard american diet, watched fat, ate good carbs, etc... My vitiligo finally stopped spreading and had been stable for the longest time. About 18 months ago, I started eating paleo mostly, cutting out carbs like pasta, rice, corn products, etc... Now I have noticed my vitiligo is reversing a bit...my knees are filling in and my forearms are filling in! Hands and feet are still white.  I have wondered if it has had something to do with a low carb diet, or maybe gluten free.  I am in my 40's, nearing 50, so it is pretty amazing to see some reversal after 2 decades of no change. Not sure. Everyone seems to have a different opinion about the relationship of diet to vitiligo.  Also, I am a very laid back person, so I question the relationship of stress to vitiligo which most people seem to associate.  I have also been a very active and naturally thin person.  Just my experience with vitiligo hope it helps. Remember to always stay positive and keep your self esteem high! God bless!

    • Ha! Thank you Mary! I have been stressing the importance of good intestinal health. Paleo diet is huge for this and you are a great example of what good eating does. So I'm sure you know about intestinal permeability and how you must heal it in order to stop autoimmune response?! Btw stress is very much so a contribution because it can inflame the gut which doesn't allow it to heal which creates gaps in the good cells that line our gut wall so undigested food particles can escape through into your blood stream which is NOT supposed to happen and when it does, your body recognizes them as foreign invaders and creates antibodies to destroy them but destroys our own tissues at the same time because they are almost identical! Leaky gut=autoimmune response. It can be healed :) certain foods can also inflame the gut. Um about to start my own battle shortly. Paleo approach and everything that heals and keeps the gut healthy.
  • Oh and the way I eat now is exactly the same to the way I ate before my E.D.

    And before/during my e.d my vit wasn't active .

    • What kinds of foods do you eat? I sent you a message on what I think is going on. Should read that and ill explain More on why I think it is happening and what ya can do about it.both of your guys comments have truth to them btw. Little fact; your gut is 80% of your immune system and if that is out if whack which a lot of peoples are without even knowing it then you have a good chance of developing autoimmune problems
  • EDNOS . & I eat hella clean . I used to eat nothing for weeks , And now I eat healthily and like a normal person . So idk if my body is just not used to this and so its considering it stress and making my vitiligo spread or something . I really don't know . Idk if it could have anything to do with my thyroid ? Like would recovering from an eating disorder affect the thyroid in any way ? I have no idea .
