Depigmentation

I am 26 years old, and I have had Vitiligo for he past 22 years. About 3 years ago I stopped treating my Vitiligo, and had decided instead to try depigmentation since my vitiligo was only getting worse. I have seen 4 dermatologists to start the depigmentation process and have had no luck. They have all told me that I should keep trying to work on pigmentation and never resort to depigmentation. I am now about 70% covered with white spots and want to start the depigmentation process as soon as possible. For the people who have and are going through the depigmentation route, where are your doctors located and is a referral needed to get an appointment?

  • I am in the Detroit, Michigan area and have successfully depigmented.  I've been completely depigmented for 10 years now.

  • Will probably do that too...I have done everything. .creams.vitamins. exercise. change diet...But still getting more spots :-( decided not to worry about them no more. Keeping my healthy life style for sure. But no more medsm
    • I've decided to stop taking the MSM supplement as well as the sulfur ointment.

On the third day of taking the MSM supplement, I felt severely depressed. Reading others experience shows this seems to be a rare reaction, but it is important to be aware of. I also read that it can have other side effects, and is used more for hair growth than lightening skin in any dramatic noticeable way. For the ointment, I couldn't find much evidence or testimonials that it fades skin pigment. It's more used for acne and other non pigment related conditions.

One absolutely critical thing I've realized now (which I should have from the beginning of trying to fade these brown spots) is that the hyperpigmentation is NOT brown spots on otherwise white skin. It is not age spots, liver spots, or freckles. It's my natural skin color (that was suppressed by monobenzone), trying to return. No treatment meant to fade hypigmentation or liver spots will work. Additionally, the pigment that has returned is  resistant to skin whiteners, and just darkens or spreads more when they are used.

I feel homeopathy is the only thing that may have an effect. I'm currently taking Lycopodium 6c and Phosphorus 6c (complementary remedies) twice a day. I don't know if they'll just restore more pigment, only time will tell.

      • Nowadays they use lasers to zap resistant pigment.

  • Sulfur can fade skin color.

I'm going to take a daily dose of 1500 mg of MSM.

I'm also applying a sulfur ointment to the brown spots on my face and arms daily.

  • A very good article on the dangers of using monobenzone to depigment:

    • Hey Omar.. , this article is for people using monobenzone to lighten up their skin and ofcourse they will be disappointed as the monobenzone is meant to kill the remaining pigment cells for people with extensive vit and does not serve as a skin lightening agent. It works best for people with autoimmune induced vitiligo in the spreading phase where it works alongside vitiligo to kill the pigment cells.

there are innumerable people who have sucessfully depigged with monobenzone and are living life free of vitiligo induced stress in their life. I am one of those. Depigment section is one of the most active forum at vitiligosupporrt.org and is full of success stories. The truth is that for people with extensive vit, this is the only therapy which you can use to get even color skin without using make-up.

While it is true that depig does not run equally smooth for everyone using mono, it does get the job done eventually if used regularly. Repig post depig is common and reapplication of mono can be used to get rid of those.

You look great after depig. what makes you rethink your decision.? Of course if someone can bring back their original pigment, it would be awesome, but we need to be practical sometimes and make the best of your existing conditions. Depig is a one way street and no therapy, including homeopathy is likely to reverse it.

      • I agree with Sanjay.  I suffered with it for a very long time and I regret why I started this late.  But ofcourse I had my own reasons because my kids were small and did not wanted to get on them but they are grown now and understand situations.

I am on 40% mono for over 6 months with good results.  My face and neck area is fully done as I was concentrating only on these two areas and I see lot of improvement on my shoulders where I have skin left.  My both legs and hands did not have any skin at all.

I am more happy now with one color and I used to hate this make up.  Yes everything has its own side effects but it is really better than suffering thinking about this all the time and just being in one color.  I am enjoying my depigmentation.

Thanks Sanjay for all the good encouragements.

  • Do not start with depigmentation. Maybe somebody will find a cure in the meantime.

    How did you treated vitiligo?

    • I have been with this for too long and now just want to get one color.  If they are finding a new cure it is good and the younger generation can use it.  It is almost 22 years with this, I have treated this with every possible thing I even have a UVB full panel at home which did not work anyway.  I need to give it off to somebody. It was not of big use to me.
