Benzoyl Peroxide ?

Just wondering if anyone knows if the ingredient 'Benzoyl Peroxide' would be bad for vitiligo considering it has bleaching properties? I have started using the face wash product- Proactive which contains this. I also bleach my hair blonde! Wondering if I should stop these?! :)

  • I dyed my hair a lot before I got vitiligo and now I don't dye my hair..I don't know if the dye has triggered vitiligo or not but I don't want to take my chances! As for the Benzoyl Peroxide, I used a lot of those acne creams before on my face. I don't have vitiligo on my face but I don't know if using the cream is such a good idea. Maybe it's okay if you use it in moderation?

  • Interesting post. Around when I got vitiligo I was using proactiv because my face was breaking out I used it for couple years and the majority of my vitiligo is on my face. My vitiligo is genetic but I'm not sure if (proactiv) influenced it but it could have worsened it or caused it to be expressed from my genes sooner..proactiv also contains parabens which are recently found to be bad for you(linked to cancer)..also I have read 60% of what we put on our skin gets absorbed into our blood stream.

It is probably best not to use it if possible..one thing that I used for acne that helped was Aztec clay mask..it is more natural and works pretty well.

Bleaching your hair blonde..it is probably not as bad as putting chemicals on your skin because when most people dye their hair they use foil or a cap and do not actually put it directly on the scalp..so I think it would be ok. It is probably more harmful to use the hair dye where you pour it on your head and rub it into your scalp.

    • Hi Kelly,

Thanks for your response :) My vitiligo is also genetic, but starting to think i need to stop using Proactive. Such a shame since it has helped my acne! In the past couple of months it has spread more on my hands and eye lids which could possible be linked to the use of this product ( have been using for 6months). It bleaches white onto my towels, so imagine what it really does to our skin! Theres no real way to tell if it is worsening our vit, but i guess its better to not take the risk :) Natural products sound like the way to go, Thanks !

  • No discusion stop it !

    • sorry, do you mean to stop using the products....or stop my discussion? :)

      • I mean the Product.

        • I though so, sorry I must have read your post wrong :) I think I will stop using this product now
