About Me:
my mother has vitiligo and my daughter was diagnosed at 5 and is now 9 I'm looking to connect with a community to learn how to be a good support for my daughter and for her to have support as she gets older my mother grew up it a time when people were less understanding and people used to think she had lepercy or something they could catch because of the trauma she went through as a child my mother carried a lot of shame she never went swimming with us always wore pants and tried to hind it the best she could she was very ashamed of having it finding out my daughter had it the first thing i thought about was how i was going to be able to help her not feel that same shame where this disease would keep her from anything in life and how i could help her with dealing with it as she gets older I'm hoping through reaching out i can find help for her to know she's not alone in this battle and no matter how bad this gets that she is perfect!

Hello and welcome!!!! Glad you joined our group!!!! :) :) :)
Hi Cherrie, I am in the same boat with two daughters with Vitiligo -- they are 9 and 10 years old. The younger one is happy go lucky, while the older one is getting stressed by what it all means. I do not think they yet realize what it will do to their appearance, but we do creams and healthy diet, which includes gluten free which the 10 year old is not happy with. I tell them the condition makes them special, that they will be stronger in their life because they will need to overcome something. And, I tell them that Vitiligo does not define them. If they think it is not a big deal, other will think the same. I think the hard road is still ahead with the onset of puberty. We have only been dealing with this for only about a year, so am still figuring this all out. Yes, they are beautiful and perfect!
