When I was a boy, I watched my mother endure vitiligo. Eventually, she lost all pigment. Little did I know at the time, I would develop the same characteristics as my mother: an autoimmune system and thyroid gone a bit haywire, and vitiligo. For about 20 years, my "spots" were subtle and not noticeable to the casual observer. In the past year, the vitiligo has decided to stage a "coming out party", spreading from my scalp to my face, and from my hands to my arms, while showing up on my neck and lower legs in a big way seemingly overnight. I'm now being treated by a dermatologist and have put out feelers on clinical trials. My mother was married with three children, but I remain single. It's a brave new world.
