About Me:

Hi there! Had one or two very small patches on my arm as a child, they were so small that I never saw a doctor about them, and then NOTHING - until the grand old age of 48, when it seemed to take off.! I am now 53 and have patches of Vitiligo under my arms and in various other places that 'the sun don't shine'. I keep hoping it won't spread any more! I did go to see a Skin Specialist about a year ago, who was very arrogant and said there was nothing she could do and then shoved a leaflet at me. I think I was given 10 minutes of her precious time (max) after waiting 6 months to see her! Oh the joys of the NHS. I think because I've developed it in later life, GP's and Skin Specialists don't seem to want to know or help. I feel as if I'm very much on my own. I don't know anybody with this condition and I feel it would be nice to chat to like-minded people. I'm sick of hearing and reading that it's 'Only Cosmetic'. It's NOT 'Only Cosmetic'! This has had a huge impact on my life since it really 'took off'. I no longer want to go on holiday, it affects a person's relationship, because of embarrassment issues and I have even (I'm ashamed to admit), avoided important health checks because of the 'embarrassment factor'. I'd would like to know how some health professionals 'justify labeling Vitiligo as being 'Only Cosmetic'! I'm having a difficult time coping with it at MY age, so my heart breaks for children, teenagers and younger adults who are struggling to cope with this dreadful condition. I hope to get some answers and support on here (and hopefully make some friends as well :) It's not all doom and gloom though! I have a good life otherwise and a loving family!
