Will Vitiligo affect both my children?

Hi there. My daughter has recently been diagnosed with vitiligo at age 8. I've just had a baby and wondered if it's possible for him to develop the condition also? I don't have vitiligo and would like to hear from parents where your children have all been affected...or not. Thanks

  • Not necessarily.

Vitiligo is triggered by severe events (physical traumas/friction, sun burns, and emotional / psycho traumas).

In order to have vitiligo triggered, one need to have one or more s causes going on, like: oxidative stress,   systematic stress, systematic friction.

Genetic cause is a big factor, but not the only one.

So, follow a good diet and avoid oxidative stress, which is a good beginning.

Oxidative stress (excess of free radicals):

→It's a complex concept that can be reached by many ways. The major ones are: food allergy, poor diet, leaky gut and dysbiosis (parasites, candida, h-pylori, yeast, fungus, etc.). It can be additionally caused by toxic chemical compounds and pollutants in your body, hydrogenated fats, all kinds of pollution (air, water and food), oils that have been heated to very high temperatures, cigarette smoke (directly inhaled or secondhand), dehydration, too much sugar, too much animal protein in your diet, geophysical stress (like living near power lines or waste dumps), viral infections, preservatives in your food, drugs (over the counter and prescription), artificial food colorings and flavorings, plastics and phthalates, chemical cleaning supplies, chlorinated water (that you drink, shower or swimming), alcohol, pesticides in your food, radiation exposure, psychological and emotional stress, endurance exercise and * incredibly * physical traumas (muscle damaging anaerobic training, trauma or injury to muscle, bone and skin).

→Oxidative stress causes defect in the membrane integrity, also causes lipid peroxidation, generates hydrogen peroxide in the skin and mutates mitochondrial DNA. All this weakens cell adhesion. NSV starts because people who are pre-disposed to have dysfunctional melanocytes, start having mutated melanocytes. Their cell adhesion becomes compromised.

    • I have 3 daughters, of which 2 have Vitiligo and one also has Hashimoto's.  No one in my family has Vitiligo, but I did get Graves disease (thyroid) after the birth of my first daughter.  I do not know what triggered it, but we did move around the time they both got it.  Also looking back, I think their diet was poor in that there was bread for breakfast, noodles for lunch and often noodles with something for dinner.  I also did not buy organic and did not filter my water.  I also did not worry about toxins in general.  This is what I do now:  1. dinners are usually gluten-free, instead I offer two veggies with protein; I try to serve many, many leafy greens, 2. Our drinking and shower water is filtered, 3. all food is organic, 4. I am in process of making homemade cleaning products, 5. I am trying to eliminate processed food (difficult with girls aged 10, 11, 13), 6. I try to stay calm and not stress, since I know my stress passes on to them (for example I avoid freeways which stress me and take back roads), 7. I try not to get upset about little things, and try to teach them to be like that too.  I suggest you research functional medicine and autoimmune disease ...  That said, my 10 year old's vitiligo is sort of stable, my 11 year old still has spreading patches.  For me as a mother this has been the hardest challenge of my life -- my kids have something I cannot necessarily fix ... the 10 year old got it aged 8, the 11 year old age 10.  I think the most important thing of all is to show your kids you love them and tell them how beautiful they are.

      • You are on the right track. Some adjustments are necessary.

Check www.vitiligomap.com (also "how to treat vitiligo" link).

        • Can you recommend a food allergy test?  Note that I also do the following: Carrot/green juice 2 or 3 times a week (apple, celery, spinach, carrots), supplements: NAC, D, fish oil, B12, Folate, multi-vitamin.  I had one on protopic and steroid creams for 8 months -- they worked, but now her eyelids are turning slightly white again (I only used protopic on the eyes); I am scared to start up protopic again.  I am still using creams on the other, with mixed results.  I am looking for a functional med doctor, but that is easier said than done, especially with 2 school aged children.  Many thanks for all the info on Vitiligo map.  How much success have you had?

          • Good success, but some places are tough, like feet and hands.

You have to follow a real full Functional Treatment to stop it from spreading. Now.

Check the gut (h-pylori, candida, parasites, leaking, etc.)

Food allergy test: www.ibstreatmentcenter.com (if money is an issue, i can tell you the exact exams your doctor should order from USBiotek ).

            Functional Treatment: http://blumcenterforhealth.com/ or http://www.ultrawellnesscenter.com/about-the-ultrawellness-center/f...

Just in case: avoid gluten, dairy and ALL processed food.

            Also avoid everything below:

    • Thanks Flavio. I'm convinced my daughter's has probably been triggered by a bad sunburn when she was little. Her eyelashes and eyebrow have lost pigmentation. I read somewhere on this site that someone used Desonide on their daughters eyebrows and it took the white pigmentation away. Do you have any experience of this?
