Why me?

Some people look at the world and say why me?

I look at the world and say why not?

  • And I usually respond to 'why me' with 'who would you rather volunteer?
    • Honestly, I would volunteer a lot of superficial and judgmental people I've met
      • I used to think this too but now I revert to this quote "Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle." - Plato

We have no idea the issues that others struggle with.

I remember being devastated when Vitiligo first spread onto my face. At that time I thought "What's the worst that can happen (in regard to Vitiligo)?"

For me it was further spreading which it did, to the point where I'm almost entirely de-pigmented.

There are times where people will point out my pale skin negatively but I have also found myself in situations where people will compliment me on how pale I am.

My initial reaction is to be upset at either a negative or positive comment because they have no idea what I've been through and the issues that I have struggled with.
      • well, I feel that things happen to people who can actually handle it for a reason. Maybe if these people are to break out with Vit, you will think otherwise. I can feel your point Hector
        • Hell, I can handle it. I went through a lot to get to where I am and I accept myself wholeheartedly. That doesn't mean I'm all-love with every arrogant sob out there, as some of them do not act out of ignorance or fear, but pure pleasure to discriminate and humiliate. I'm not "God" but I would sure volunteer one of them instead... I definitely wouldn't give MY vit to someone else as I've come to terms with having it, but I do feel the hopelessness when I see the weight it imposes on somebody who is innocent and fragile... in a perfect world nobody should suffer because of this condition, alas if it cannot be, I'd rather see it on shallow people
        • 'well, I feel that things happen to people who can actually handle it for a reason

          I beg to differ Ogo
There are many, many people that can not handle having or living with vitiligo. I kinda think there're far more people who struggle with vit than people who actually accept it.
And to be perfectly honest, I don't see the purpose of one having vitiligo at all ...
          • Maybe the people who "can not" handle it just arent handling it. I mean if you really think about it, your skin is changing colors. Big deal. It's not cancer or multiple sclerosis, or any number of diseases that could kill you or cause you to not be able to walk, talk, eat, or wipe your own butt. I would much rather have vitiligo than many other illnesses that are out there. What is the purpose of anyone having any disease, really? People stare, point, whisper, laugh, and assume things about me too. Don't know em, don't care!
I put on my facebook page a thank you to my friends for not allowing my vitiligo be an issue in our friendships. Do you know that some of them were like...." you have what?" "I never even noticed". That is why those people are my friends, because they took the time to look past what they saw and got to know me. It is all about personality and self-acceptance. If you look at yourself and loathe what you see, then why should anyone else make you feel good about yourself? I look in the mirror and see the good and keep going and I have people hit on me often.....because of personality! If they dont like me, they keep going and that is all good too. If they are mean or hurtful, thank you for letting me see your true colors right off the bat, I have no interest in having someone like you in my life!

We are different.....and different is ok by me!!!!

I do have to apologize if I offended anyone. Maybe 27 years of vitiligo makes my outlook different. I just dont see the big deal in having it. I just hate that I burn even with SPF60+ on!!!!
            • You really shouldn't be burning, black skin gives 13 SPF tops, it's not about the highest SPF, but continuous application every 3 hours if you're going to be out there in the sun. (Personally, I use a 90 SPF cream, but only if I'm going out for over 10 minutes, I usually don't go outside after 10am and before 6pm)
            • May be ... if the "changing of color" happened overnight (or over a month), intead of over a life time - then it would be much easier to accept VIT. It is the "inbetween colors" time period that is hard to live with.
      • hell yes hector. my thoughts exactly. There are boatloads of people who deserve vit more than the people who get it. I would volunteer them in a heartbeat.
