Hello everyone!
Does anyone know of any links between thyroid issues and vitiligo and why the links are there? I've been told for years that vitiligo can link to issues with the thyroid but I've never been able to find out why.
Only reason I ask is because today I've been told that my thyroid is slightly overactive and my doctor has asked if I think it has something to do with my vitiligo.
If anyone can help me or offer any suggestions that would be great.
Thank you! :D

unfortunately there is a link between vitiligo and thyroid. Several days ago I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease (autoimmune thyroid disease), and doctor told me that it is linked with vitiligo, actualy when person develops one autoimmune disease he/she is prone to other autoimmune diseases. When I developed vitiligo mI did thyroid lab tests that showed under active thyroid, with negative thyroid antibodies, but apparently in a meanwhile (10 months) antibodies developed :(
Is overactive thyroid in your case autoimmune?
I believe that same gene trigers both diseases, also I believe that this has something with MTHFR gene mutation....
Also thee must be something, most of the people with thyroid ai. diseases don't develop vitiligo, but majority of vitiligo sufferers develop some kind of thyroid ai disease :(

Hi Maria, thank you so much for replying! I'm sorry about your news of the Hashimoto's disease, I hope that you will be able to find a way to treat it or ease the symptoms.
I am not too sure if my thyroid issues are autoimmune as my thyroid levels change a lot, ranging from slightly underactive to slightly overactive but at the moment it is not extreme enough to take medication for it although they said they will keep an eye on it especially with me having vitiligo for such a long time.
The idea of the same genes and mutations makes sense if a lot of vitiligo sufferers have autoimmune thyroid issues, perhaps the vitiligo acts as a trigger for the thyroid issues whereas if the thyroid is affected first the vitiligo doesn't spread.
Thank you so much for helping me! :)

Dear Amy,
