  • I'm going to take a bit of a different approach.

    1)  I would say a cure is a good 10-15 years off, if not more.  The reason why I say this is that I don't believe that repigmentation is a cure at all but rather something that just covers up and delays the main issues.  Again this is my opinion but I believe that in order to effectively treat or cure vitiligo, the spread must first be stopped, whereupon repigmentation can take place through other means.  Thus far, every so-called "cure" stimulates repigmentation that may last for week, months, or even years but IS NOT permanent.  That fact is well documented.  Simply put, I am giving this a long-term date simply because there is more money to be made in temporary repigmentation than there is in "stopping" progression.

This is an awesome and recent post from UMass that explains things:  http://www.umassmed.edu/vitiligo/blog/blog-posts1/2014/10/why-isnt-...

    2)  There is a ton of research.  For example, Philips is launching their BlueLED technology for psoriasis which they are also testing as a low-side effect way for possible vitiligo repigmentation: http://www.blueledtherapy.com/.  The main focus of many studies is to study the parthenogenesis of the disease along with certain gene markers that can help with possible future gene therapies.

    3)    I personally think this is one of the best hopes right now:  http://www.vitiligofriends.org/forum/topics/interview-with-dr-carol...

There are also two promising secondary therapies, being Neovir (ODHAA) in Russia and even the popular Simvastatin which is available in North America as a medication for cholesterol and is currently under testing for possible vitiligo cessation.

    4)  A good option is Protopic as a first-line repigmentation tool along with very limited sun exposure.  Watch out for pseudocatalase snake-oil salespeople.

    • Hi, MichaelH

I agree that 100% cure may take a little long.

At-list some product/cream/drug which shop vitiligo speeding may help a lot for time being.. Currently there are few treatments, but not helping all.

Just waiting for the day. When someone come's with sure cure with just 1 cream/drug for all.

Thanks for sharing your view.. :)

    • It's semantics.

According to Merrian Webster, cure is:

: something (such as a drug or medical treatment) that stops a disease and makes someone healthy again

: something that ends a problem or improves a bad situation

: the act of making someone healthy again after an illness

So, cure based in genetics/DNA will really take so long.

Cure based on effects (recovering life quality) is really coming.

I wish I will be the one to announce it when it's available...I dream of it.

In the meantime,  there are some alternatives as: Protopic (like you said), Elidel, Pseudocatalae, UVB_NB, Supplements, Anti-oxidants,  Life style, Diets, etc. that help one to fight against and sometimes to revert or avoid spreading.

Please see the recent post: http://www.vitiligofriends.org/forum/topics/some-pseudocatalase-tre...

      • I do agree but like I said: it all boils down to someone's perspective.  Some will consider some repigmentation to be a "cure".  Others will feel that a better way of living (ie minimizing the psychological effects of vitiligo) is a  cure.

I am simply putting this into terms from my perspective.

        • I agree.  Let's say so, the relief is coming soon...

Michael, I've been trying hard to be optimistic.  The good thing about it is that I'm really following up the researches and having excellent feedback.

Last, but not least, regarding pseudocatalase cream, no one needs to buy it.  You can do it yourself (  http://www.vitiligomap.com/germantreat.html )

  • Mahesh,  you made a difficult question, but I will try to express my point of view.

1- I believe that in 2 years some real cure will come up.  At least for non-segmental vitiligo, which is the most popular one.  Like any drug / cream, it may not have 100% effectiveness, but it will be definitely high.

2- Many.  Dozens.  However,  some of them are aiming the genetic cause (DNA).  I don't follow those ones, since they will take serious time to come up with a drug.  Most of the time,  they just open doors to other researchers find the real cure.

    I keep following 3 researches.

    - Heat Shoch Protein (http://ecommons.luc.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1728&contex...)

    - Afamelanotide 16mg (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23407924 and http://www.clinuvel.com/en/scenesse/scenesse-afamelanotide

    - MIA protein (www.researchforvitiligo.com).

3-They are all promising,  but the MIA protein research is the one that seems to be  closer to come up with a topical medicine.

4- Yes.  Currently you have pseudocatalase cream that might help a lot.  Protopic helps face small patches.  And Elidel can also be an alternative.

    • Thank you so much FLAVIO

You always give best and effective reply. I am happy with your reply and also happy to know that high cure may available in next 2 years..

But same time also pray that,  genetic cause vitiligo treatment should come soon. So our next generation should not face because we have it.

      Hoping  for the BEST

      • You're right.

And we definitely need luck too, since hope and faith we have enough.

        • Haha :) correct
          • Btw, I will try next week  Afamelanotide 5mg.  I will let you know about it.
