Vitiligo And Hypothyroidism

Hi. I am Kayla(19) new to this site and i had a question.

I have had Vitiligo since i was 2. I got it very fast on my legs, stomach, scalp and around my eyes and it hasn't progressed any since i was about 5 its actually going away very slowly around my eyes and legs on its own.

But now that I'm 19 I was just diagnosed with hypothyroidism and i seen it has supposedly been linked to Vitiligo and i was just curious if there is a connection of some kind.

My grandfather had Vitiligo as well but he never actually got diagnosed with it and he had some serious mood problems so i think he prolly had a thyroid issue as well. Well if anyone has an answer i would appreciate it. Thanks

  • During a recent visit to the doctor she noticed that one side of my neck was swollen and told me to make an appointment to get an ultrasound done on my neck area I'm scheduled for that ultrasound tomorrow september 8 2010 this test will be able to tell me if this is serious like a (Goiter) or if my lymph nodes are swollen but wish me luck during my ultrasound procedure and please keep me in your prayers so that I hopefully won't need throat surgery

    • Good luck. You're in my prayers...
    • Good luck Carl, Pray said for you!
    • You'll be in my thoughts! I have a family friend who is going through the same ordeal and she should get her results soon.
  • Thanks to everyone who answered my question. Ive had vitiligo for as long as i can remember but i never knew too much about it so i appreciate everyone who replied.
  • For anyone interested there is a Thyroid Message Board.
  • My Vitiligo started because of hypethyroidism. I still have an over active thyroid, and I plan to get it removed.Thats all I know about it. Good luck with your search.
    • I had Radioactive Iodine Ablation (RIA). It wasn't a choice for me as I was so bad off when I was diagnosed that I was in the hospital for nearly a week. In fact, I was put on heart medication before I was put on Sythroid because I was that far off. They told me that my age was the only thing that saved me had I been older, I would have died from congestive heart failure. It's usually older patients that are diagnosed with Graves' but I think that is changing over time.

I understand there is some controversy regarding RIA vs. Removal. As I said, I didn't have a choice but so far I haven't come across any issues other than my levels being too high/low.
  • I was diagnosed with Graves disease which is actually a form of hyperthyroidism in 2006 and it deals much more with the eyes to protrude. People thought I was on drugs all the time since I looked high 24/7 and I even had a cop pull me over because of that.

During that same year is when I noticed white spots forming on my hands but didn't think much of it since they were really small patches. It wasn't until 2007 that the spots began to become patches and when I had my doctors appointment he clarified that it was Vitiligo and it does have a connection with a thyroid dysfunction

I was so pissed about having been diagnosed with Graves disease a year before and now diagnosed with vitiligo and knowing that there's no type of cure for it, man WTF! I was more depressed than angry.

With regular doctor visits and taking medication my thyroid levels have been stable and my eyes have improved but the Vitiligo has not stopped spreading. It's inevitable and now that it's spread to my lips I have been more depressed lately.
    • There are times where I feel that Graves' sucks even more than Vitiligo. I lost the majority of my remaining pigment before I was diagnosed with Graves'. My doctor told me that since I had Vitiligo prior to Graves', when my body started attacking itself, the majority of my remaining pigment was attacked as well.

It's a hassle having to go to my doctor every three to six months for a checkup and when they change my dosage, my body is slow to adjust. When my levels are off, my hair falls out, my nails break and the anxiety becomes insane along with the other issues it presents.

It's hard at those times to be optimistic because it's so frustrating but when my levels are good, I feel normal.
