Vitiligo and Diet

On the internet I have read that changing your diet can make Vitiligo better. Is this true? If so what foods should be avoided? Which foods are okay? I am willing to try anything for my 3 year old son that was just diagnosed with Vitiligo 2 weeks ago. Thank you!

  • Oh and one last thing, the Protopic cream is working, I can easily see the difference from just 2 weeks ago, so we stick with it.
  • Hi! My 4 yrs old daughter was diagnosed with Vitiligo 2 weeks ago too. We already have a really good diet with a lot of vegetables, fruits, and a minimum of processed food. We are juicing for years, it's where I can easily get my kids to eat spinash or kale. This week, I decided to give a try with the gluten free diet, will see if it's helps. Good luck to you, I wish as they are so young we will keep them from the spreading.

I am using only natural soaps and lotions in my house, even for cleaning, I will keep using those products.

Good luck to you, I wish as they are so young we will keep them from the spreading.

    • Plus, by looking back in my many pictures from her, I can tell now her Vitiligo started a year ago.
    • Ok I see. We live in California for years now. We are eating only organic since many years, being in California is the best for it!!! We have a really healthy lifestyle, but we can always improve right?:) Her vitamine D level is fine. I think you are right for the supplements, that's why I wanted to make more reading on that subject, since my daughter is young, I don't want to jeopardize her health. Thank you again Shifa!
    • That's a tricky question and I honestly don't think any dermatogist will know. How was her vitamin d level? Being that are are from Quebec it might be low. Also is it possible she had the spots before and you are just beginning to notice Bc climate in California is much hotter. i don't know some ppl say the sun makes it worse. Again there alot of varying opinions.

Irritible bowel syndrome. Honestly with such young kids be careful for vitamins and supplementation. Definitely they may help but I feel it's best to start with one and then see what effects it has. If do too many things at once it's harder to figure out what is helping and what is not.

Diet would be the first to start out with. It's great that you are already doing alot. Have you switched to organic? California is a great state for organic foods.

look into alkaline diet and if possible try eliminating diary (hard to do with such a young child) or doing gluten free to see if this works. I would do one first and try the other.

They are kids...and in attempt to save them from this disease I hope we don't stress them out or take away from their childhood.

Of course good nutrition and healthy lifestyle is good for everyone. make sure she is busy in lots of activities and has loads of fun.
    • Thanks for your reply! No my daughter doesn't have any problem, we ran all the tests.
We haven't look in homeopaty yet, I wanted to start the bew diet and see before. I have read Emily's story. I just don't know where to go to get the supplements and how much
my daughter needs. I need to figured out all that. I will ask her dermatologist to get her B12 checked. What is IBS?
    • have you tried homeopathy @annie?

Its best to first understand how homeopathy works.  there's a lot about the Ph diet and we should be alkaline and prevents any disease.  sounds great and awesome in theory I would love for people to actually try it out.

there was also a paper by a member called fading theory or something to that effect.  her name is valerie.  check her thread and paper out.  also do check out emily's vitiligo by eric fricker .

remember no one has the "perfect" diet or cure for anything especially vitiligo...its a complicated puzzle..  However we can work to solve this mysteries so that our kids can have a better future.

helplessness breeds hopelessness.  so def. be proactive and I remain positive that we can hopefully manage the way the disease progresses.

annie does your daughter have any issues with metabolism, IBS or anything.  there are a lot ppl who believe a leaky gut has some connection with viitligo.

  • some things to try:

    coconut oil

    ginger juice

limit his sugar intake.  sugar is suppose to increase yeast overgrowth.  someone just mentioned that he thinks vitiligo might be candida overgrowth?  i heard that cancer might be a fungus but this is a first.  there has been a lot about sugar wrecking havoc on body...and its an immunosuppressant.

  • Are using any other creams or treatment? While you are repigmenting are u getting new spots or patches too?
  • Yes, it is true! I have been doing it and I have seen a lot of change, slow but progressing... Foods that I have increased are : Spinach ( as much as you can) I actually make a spinach smothie every morning... Losts of water very important, Green in general, avoid citrus fruits ( lemon, lime, green apple etc) You can go online and find more details.. Coffee is a no no, thats my biggest battle, sugar, juices, processed food the least the better...... But yes a good diet plays a big part of the repigmentation process. At least for me it has! Good Luck!
