this is new to me, and quite overwhelming

I was told that vitiligo usually shows up before you are forty years old.  Well mine showed up at 38.  I went to a dematologist who told me that it looked like a fungus. My chin has lost it color.  I am African american, carmel skin color, and my chin is now like a light tan. The dermatolgist gave me an antifungul which had no effect.  When I did my research, Everything lead to vitilgo.  Could it possibly be something else?

  • Vitiligo start at any age. We don't know when. My started when I was 12 years old. It spread through out the year until I did a treatment call PUVA. Very time consuming. That treatment is good for small area. But it is worth your an effort.

I suggest start your treatment early. This may help the spreading, but we just don't know what vitiligo will do. Add me to your friend list OK. Keep in touch. Take care.
    • Thank you. I don't feel as alone. I first felt like a freak, so self conscious. I almost quit my job. I had to remember that there is more to me than this, and I am determined to try something that can help instead of feeling sorry for myself.
  • I didn't start until I was in my mid 30's.. My neighbor also has it and she didn't start until her mid 70's... so you never know. If you think you have it, then you probably do... But, it is something you can learn to live with. It's not easy, but, I look at it this way, it could be a lot worse.
    • thank you
  • I would suggest a second opinion. If you think it's vitiligo, it looks like vitiligo, if all signs point to vitiligo, then it probably is. However, the sooner you get the right medical attention, the better. Look online for other dermatologist in your area or ask your health insurance for a new dermatologist, maybe one that specializes in vitiligo or those type of skin disorders. You know your body better than anyone.
    • Thank you. I don't feel as bad as I did when I first discovered the spots. It is good to have someone who understands.
  • The onset of vitiligo is usually about 20 years of age but you can get it as early as 5 or late as 85 it all depends on your body and your immune system !!!!!

    • I've always been very healthy, I've never been hospitalized for anything except childbirth. I have checkups regulary. I know a little about the immune system and diseases, and also scientist think that this is an autoimmune disease. I just don't know who I can improve my heath if there is nothing wrong.
