The season to cover up

For those of us who celebrate Christmas, that holiday is right around corner. Whatever your holiday, or non-holiday, this is normally the season where Vitiligo sufferers get to cover up. I love my sweaters, boots, hats, and gloves.  Cute accents to stay warm to most, but to me it used to be a time I could hide my condition.  The weather has been unseasonably warm in Houston, so I have not been able to wear my favorite winter accessories very often this year. Despite that, my mind has been preoccupied as I consciously focus on the wonderful, positive distractions of my life; I have literally forgotten that I have Vitiligo at times. When I am reminded of my condition, I am no longer bitter. As a friend and I were discussing, Vitiligo does not stop my party!

  • Then go ahead and do it.. :) You sure won't regret it..
    • Sanjay, my struggle is that I truly do love my beautiful brown skin.  I'm just not ready to loose that brown completely.  If the "vit" ever becomes more dominant on my body then I will just let go of the brown.
  • Good for you!

I've been so busy lately that my vitiligo has gone to the back of my thoughts. And you are so right- when we have so many wonderful things in our lives, who has time to focus on their skin color?

And I do love that the colder weather makes my long sleeves easier on my body temperature. I wear long sleeves and pants year round and live in Florida, so I just kinda get used to sweating!

    • Hi Ali,

It is so good to busy.  Nonetheless, my skin does cross my mind from time to time, but I try not to give it any more attention than I would any other aspect of getting dressed.  I have vitiligo on my arms, legs and torso, so I too wear long sleeves year round. However, in the summer if I wear long on top then I wear short bottoms and vice versa.  I hate sweating, but in Houston, TX, which is probably the same in FL, you sweat in the summer no matter what you wear. :-)

      • u'r too pretty to be dealing with sweat all the time.  go for the comfort.

or wear real thin materials. but i say, be comfortable.

      • I will entertain short sleeve tops, but because the vit is so wild on my shins, I haven't worn a skirt or dress without opaque tights in over 2 years :-(

Then again, I was always particular about my gams. If I had razor burn or a slight scrape or cut, my legs remained covered until the coast was clear. Looks like they'll be covered until I finish depigging...

        • Ali, you could wear a garbage bag and you'll still be gorgeous. tank tops and mini-shorts... theyre all you... and sunscreen hahahaha , please we dont want u to burn anymore.

you look beautiful, multi-tone skin is NOT taking away from that. it cant.

        • I understand.  Sometimes, I wish I could just completely depigment.  It would be nice to simply be the same color all over. The chocolate, caramel, vanilla patterns that grace my skin right now can be very distracting to someone seeing it for the first time.
