People can make some very ignorant comments or rude gestures about us people with vitiligo I should know because I have heard my share during my almost 30 years dealing with this disorder. Why do people act like we are aliens from another planet or something ? I'm a human being with feelings and emotions just like anyone else. Sometimes I used to act like names didn't hurt me but on the inside I was sad because the comments tore me up inside. Every where I went people would have a different reaction to my vitiligo so I was always a little more comfortable being around familiar area's near my home because the people who know or see me the most didn't really care about my vitiligo because they were used to seeing it on a daily basis, but strangers or me being in a strange place I could always expect somebody to stare, gesture, or make ignorant comments which made me feel uncomfortable and being a African-American male in a city of 1.5 Million people that's 60% percent African American, my own people can be the ones who make the most ignorant comments and remarks and I think anybody else of my race can understand what I'm saying because some black folks can be very ignorant and I'm hurt by those remarks because I never experienced any other type of hurt by anybody else of any other race except from my own people !!!!!!
You need to be a member of Vitiligo Friends to add comments!
Dear Brandy, Courtney and Heather the worst insult I heard somebody say about me was when they called me "Bleach" it was the worst name I have ever been called concerning my vitiligo but it never amazes how people will say some of the dumbest things out of their mouths because the level of stupdity and ignorance in some people are really at a high level
Bleach...?!?!? yeow....
well, we know black people are prejudiced against their own that arent "black" enuff , either by skin color or attitude. (hence the term "high yellow" for light skinned blacks.)
"we have found the enemy, and he is us."

What's crazy is that not only are some black people prejudiced against people who aren't black enough, but some are also prejudiced against those who are very dark skinned.
i know... how f'd up is that? u dont hear other races/ethnic groups going on like that. i dont get it. i'm still hoping that one day in the future from inter-racial marriages and such we will eventually be one people of one color. of course we'll find some other reason to hate ourselves.

Wishful thinking. I have heard by some of my Latino friends that the Latino community has the same problem...with people being color struck.

Yes Marty they called me "Bleach" and I will never forget that for the rest of my life
brandy, i no how you feel compleetly! im in high school now and even tho im light skined nd it may not be as noticeable people still notice it and point and snicker twords me nd it hurts inside. but people dont no what it is and think its something contagous or gross and thats why i think its important to get this into the air and get people to no and understand what it is. because i havent ever nown or seen any one with this condition in my area and i kinda wish i did but i dont. one of the meanest things that was said to me and this was done like 2 weeks ago, a boy on my cross country team called me half albino it really hurt because usally people ask do u wear sunglasses because ur skin is lighter around ur eyes i just say yes. but once he said that another guy was like yeah what is it? u just have white patches all over you i about cried but i stayed strong and didnt, even tho i really wanted to.
heather... one thing i've learned about kids (except real means ones) is that they say stupid stuff out of ignorance. and our illness is not well known Next time that happens, instead of feeling insulted or bad, understand their ignorance and try explaining it to them (i find when u say "like michael jackson had" helps people understand quicker). then if they still act stupid. consider them dumb, laugh and move on. ;-)
no one can make you feel bad or small or anything without your letting them.

But I echo what Marty said about our "people."
