Hello everybody!
I am Maria from Pakistan. I have vitiligo since i was 7 yrs, i am now 27, it didn't spread much but since last 3 yrs it covered my 30% body. Anyway, the thing is its coming on my face i could notice. I am student of Communication design and after my graduation i will have to work in ad agency, now i get worried if i will get job because people are self conscious in media. I want to ask as i am thinking to change my major, is it right thought? should i let vitiligo come on my career way? or it just doesn't matter? this is making me insane.

Hi , I think you can do anything but in someplace will be better to wear make up because if you want people to focus on what you are saying rather than the fact you are different. But try to speak to people at the agency once you get to know them. I had some work for a branding company and I loved all the experience. Life is about experience and to say no to new experience only because you might feel unhappy sometimes is pointless ;-)
Maria this is a very good question. Unfortunately I did let vitiligo get in the way of my career. I also have a degree in Communications. My initial intent was to become a news reporter, but I was so self-conscious of my vitiligo that I gave up on that goal altogether. In my current profession, I work closely with alot of people and I find myself feeling very self-conscious again, especially when people comment on my lips and hands. I have accepted the fact that I'm going to have to live with vitiligo, but it's not an easy journey with my dark skin. I say go with your heart. If you are passionate about your career, then stick with it. You might have to wear make-up more often, but in my case I choose not to. Good luck with your endeavors:-)
YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL Iem very self conscious to and i learn to love my self how iem so you should focus on your career by the way do you know some farsi my babys family is from IRAN hope to visit over their soon
hiya, if you think the cream (derma colour and fixing powder free from the red cross) is not working for you then do not give up, I think in some cases it's better for women because they can even cover it with makeup, people may just say too much make-up yeah well you say you have money, and you spend it they way you want it lol and its not like men with make up on their face!!! It can be a nightmare, but also depends on how sensitive you are about it and how you respond, do you know about vitiligo much to respond in the way they may love you more! and how much people know about vitiligo in that area this is what the WHO needs to do, (World Health Organisation). Also we should be proud that we have not got cancer or any other killer illnesses. Thank God that Vitiligo is the safest disorder ever come. May be you're only doing certain hours so respectable clothes with some cover up will do for the next 3-5 years until the cure will come it's on its way to human trials so it could be much sooner.
Be strong and go for what you want. Life is short, make the most out of it.
Hey Maria! I understand your worries, I'm a graphic designer in Marketing. My experience with people in the agency world though has been good, Yes people will notice your vitiligo, if you act with confidence though they will admire your determination even more. I find that if I'm upfront with people and be truthful in the beginning they accept you for who you are. If you don't make a big deal out of your spots they won't either.
I am lighter skinned than you though, and you don't notice my spots on my face so if I can't quite relate I'm sorry. Vitiligo doesn't run your life, you do! You may regret your decision one day and that would be sad :( Good luck!
but when i in societly, ( i have full time job), i would use sth to cover it... you know. sometimes...some people ......so ...i think it is better to cover it..
