It's interesting how the same cause (friction / trauma) can provoke opposite effects. It can cause hyperpigmentation in some people, instead.
Friction/trauma plays really a big role on the melanosoma cycle (transport of melanin).
See below the opposite effect on some places that we commonly see vitiligo patches.
Unfortunately it seems that a genetically non-segmental vitiligo predisposed person has his/her melanocyte's adhesion mechanism faulty that will constantly be threatened:
(1) by the action of friction and trauma in certain regions like knees, elbows, hands, feet, wrists, around the eyes, forehead and around the mouth;
(2) facilitated by oxidative stress, and;
(3) accelerated by stress hormones.
