Parents: Do you know if Vitiligo is inherited directly?

I have Vitiligo and my mom has thyroid disease, which is a known link. However, I was curious how many parents have Vit-free children and whether there are studies that show Vitiligo isn't passed directly from parent to child. I have a 16 month old son and I hope he doesn't get it. Nobody in my family on either side has/had it that I know of so I seem to be an anomaly.

  • Well my gram on my moms side had it ,and my aunt(moms sis) of nine kids was the only1 to get it...My mom doesnt have it..I have one sis and she doesnt have it..I have two children boh boys eight and six..my oldest seems to be fine but my youngest seems to be showing signs of little faded patches on his face not copletely white, but some times they go away and reappear..So pretty sure he"s goin to have it ,and it sucks..BUt it seems like most ppl tht do have it,it gererates from moms side of the Fam...?
  • I am the only person in my family that has vitiligo
  • Vitiligo is auto-immune as is the thyroid issue. If you research you may find some other auto-immune disorders in your family. Vitiligo is just on the spectrum. Your child may never have vitiligo, but may or may NOT present with some other disorder on the auto-immune spectrum.
  • I have 4 children, 23, 15, 12 and 10. So far none of them have it. No one in my family has it except me and I'm one of nine. good luck.
