Does anyone know something about paleo diet? Do you think it could improve our skin condition? I have read that vitiligo and leaky gut are conected and with paleo protocol / diet we could improve our vitiligo condition. What do you think about it?

  • I will be starting an "auto-immune paleo" diet with my daughters later this summer (AIP paleo).  I have found a functional medicine doc who will work with me.  She has put her own autoimmune diseases into remission through diet.  It is difficult to do, and initially you do an elimination diet.  Here are some blogs that I follow that you might be interested in... they are about autoimmune disease, but which is what Vitiligo can be.

    • I have bought a book regarding paleo diet and maybe after summer I will start with this diet too. Until now I have tried with macrobiotic diet, but I haven't seen any improvement. Now if I start with paleo diet I have to change some things, but I think that I have to try.

I will tell you my experiences.

  • This article/comments indicate at least some success with a Paleo type diet:

In my opinion, the details of the particular diet seem to vary and is somewhat of a moving target. At the very least, the diet does appear gut friendly and therefore is worth a shot. As you've indicated, there's certainly a connection between the gut and the skin.

    • Definitely.  Everything starts in the gut.  Skin is an easy target for diseases.

If gut is not smooth, whatever happens is a potential oxidative stressor.

      See below:

Oxidative stress (excess of free radicals).

→It's a complex concept that can be reached by many ways. The major ones are: food allergy, poor diet, leaky gut and dysbiosis (parasites, candida, h-pylori, yeast, fungus, etc.). It can be additionally caused by toxic chemical compounds and pollutants in your body, hydrogenated fats, all kinds of pollution (air, water and food), oils that have been heated to very high temperatures, cigarette smoke (directly inhaled or secondhand), dehydration, too much sugar, too much animal protein in your diet, geophysical stress (like living near power lines or waste dumps), viral infections, preservatives in your food, drugs (over the counter and prescription), artificial food colorings and flavorings, plastics and phthalates, chemical cleaning supplies, chlorinated water (that you drink, shower or swimming), alcohol, pesticides in your food, radiation exposure, psychological and emotional stress, endurance exercise and * incredibly * physical traumas (muscle damaging anaerobic training, trauma or injury to muscle, bone and skin).

→Oxidative stress causes defect in the membrane integrity, also causes lipid peroxidation, generates hydrogen peroxide in the skin and mutates mitochondrial DNA. All this weakens cell adhesion. NSV starts because people who are pre-disposed to have dysfunctional melanocytes, start having mutated melanocytes. Their cell adhesion becomes compromised.

      • Flavio,

do you have any news about the research of Dr Bordignon?.
        • Yes.  Not good.  The laboratory is asking for an animal model to start working in the medicine production.

I will meet him early august.
