Our Derm's opinion on Protopic Vs Elidel

Sharing some information coming from our Dermatologist with the forum purely for informational purposes only.

Our derm always prescribes Protopic.  Since, I came to know about Elidel thru this forum, i enquired with the derm regarding the differences between the two and his preference of Protopic over Elidel.   Derm indicated that, he used to prescribe Elidel in the past for few years. Since he was not seeing the desired results, he switched to Protopic.  He did say, that, he found "great success" in Protopic and hence, sticking with Protopic.  He also made a comment that, Elidel is not so greasy as Protopic.

Hence, for now, we are sticking with protopic.

  • Pimecrolimus cream (Elidel) is approved for the treatment of mild to moderate atopic dermatitis. Tacrolimus ointment (Protopic) is approved for the treatment of moderate to severe atopic dermatitis. I guess Protopic is stronger than Elidel - which is why it works better. Yes ??!! Of course - both Protopic and Elidel were meant to be used for Eczema anyway !!!!!
