Newbie here! Would appreciate some feedback.

This is all new to me. I have a 6 and 7 year old who do not have this disease yet my 5 month old was just diagnosed with it. I am scared, don't know what to expect, how bad and how fast it gets worse what the options are. Please help to enlighten me!

  • Hi, Anna -

Your child is not too young to have tinea versicolor.  I would definitely get a second opinion.

    Keep us posted!

    Kindest regards,

    Jackie

  • He prescribed a steroid cream. I have thought so myself as well. You see, at his 2 month well baby appt. he had not one patch then his formula got changed from enfamil to similar sensitive and also rice cereal and shortly thereafter they appeared.
    • Hello Flavio,
I thought so too and asked the Dermatologist about tinea versicolor and he said that he's too young to have that.
      • Anyway, it does not look like vitiligo.  See another doctor before starting any treatment, that might be a waste of time and money.

    • I'm not a doctor, but the pictures you have posted are making me think that your son does not have vitiligo, but pityriasis (tinea) versicolor, which is frequently diagnosed as vitiligo.  I may be wrong.

      • You better see another Dermatologist for a second opinion.

  • So what did your dermatologist ask you to do?
One of the main cause of Vitiligo is Oxidative Stress in the Skin. In this type of stress Hydrogen Peroxide is produced in the skin and it interferes with the natural occurring pigmentation process.
Oxidative stress in the Skin may be caused due to the Leaky Gut Syndrome . Leaky Gut can be caused due to food allergy. It's fixable by avoiding such food items which cause this problem and including the ones which support the digestive system.
Since, your baby's primary food source is milk and he is only 5 months old. There is a chance but not surely that his Vitiligo may be related to proper digestion of milk.
It's just an assumption on my part.
  • Thank you kindly for the reply. No tests were done or anything. Baby's Pediatrician didn't know what is was so she told me to see a dermatologist he took one look at it and said he has Michael Jackson skin he has vitiligo.
  • Dear Ms. Anna,
My own opinion is that till your child is 1 year old you shouldn't do anything. Infact this is the first time I have heard that such a young baby having being diagnosed with Vitiligo.
So see how it goes till the baby is 1. Thereafter, you must slowly try to include as many green veggies like- spinach, celery, etc in the baby's diet as possible. Avoid foods containing too much Vitamin C.
Is it too early to say whether the baby has an allergy to milk. Discus this possibility with your doctor.
After the baby is a little older many different treatment options are available.
You can decide then in which direction to proceed. Let's hope for the best.
