Hi guys newbee here, im struggling with varius conflicting info on the web i have a large vit patch on my ankle and have been thinking about getting a tatoo to cover it, but some sites say its fine others saying you shouldn't do it because it can lead to increase risk of skin cancer. So whats the real answer.

  • I'm really glad I found this thread. I have 3 tattoos & have been wanting to get one redone but was

worried since vitilgo has shown in me,,this was really useful

  • i know this is a somewhat old post but i hope this helps anyone else looking for advice on the subject.

my doctor cleared me to be able to get a tattoo before i even got my first one. there are other things to think about before getting tattoos on your vit areas though. if you are using color, it will come out brighter on vit areas than on your normally pigmented skin. also i noticed when i was little that whenever i got a cut or scrape that there was a chance of new vit skin turning up as it was healing/after it healed. on only one of my tattoos there are new spots turning up around it. so if you're thinking about getting a tattoo just be prepared for that. just think about that kind of stuff before getting a tattoo. i'm in the process of getting a full backpiece right now, i have 3 others, and i plan to get many more! enjoy your tattoos

    hope this was helpful :]

  • Vitiligo and cancer is an old theory, researchers have found out that we are not more vulnerable to skin cancer than others , the anti body which attacks the melanocyts is protecting us from the most dangerous type of skin cancer too , any way we have to tack care not to burn since we have no protection against UV on the vitiligo area.

Some claim that the skin trauma from the tattoo can onset vitiligo others has no problem that is why it is advised to use micropigmentation if you have stable vitiligo and professional advisor who can find ur type of pigment.
I have tried Micropigmentation on small size of stable vitiligo many years ago I had no any problem on that area but my vitiligo started again on other part after 10 years.

Micropigmentasion has been presented on Vitiligo world congress as an alternative cover up/ make up In Italy your doctor have to proof that vitiligo is stable.

    Goodluck!

  • Hi Aaron,

I have come across mixed opinion about tattooing too, although I haven't heard the part about skin cancer - so here goes...

I went to see a woman about medical micropigmentation, she tattoos vit patches back to your usual skin tone. I was quite keen to try it out on my elbow but she advised me not to straight away, as if I carried on with the procedure it might irritate the area and cause it to spread. But this is only if you're uncertain if it's dormant (is that the word?) or not. It's been a while since I saw her now but I'm still a little weary of her feedback so that's why I haven't gone ahead with it... Perhaps you should ask around some places and see how successful it's been or see what feedback / testimonials they have. Or try and track down people who have done it before, then you can find out firsthand.

I hope some of this helps :) x
    • it was more the traditional tatoo rather than the micropigmentation, got to see my doc monday so i'll see what he thinks.

      Cheers
