My Long Awaited Dermatology Appointment

I waited two months for this appointment only to go and be disappointed.  I'm more than positive that the doctor had no clue as to what he was looking at on my face.  By the way did anyone vit spots gradually lose their color, or did they just appear as total white from the start?  Anyway this is my second appointment with two different derm.  First he looks at my face and tells me that hes going to perscribe a bleaching cream!   He was refering to s small dark mark in my face, as if the light spots were invisible. Then he said I had melasma, (Wrong Again!  that is also dark spots usually associated with pregnancy.  He finally said that i had seborrahic dermatitis or something like that.  He prescribed hydrocortisone 2%, and Selium shampoo.  So I asked why shampoo. his dumb intern said that it would run down my face covering the light patches!  I had to get away from that office, what and idiot!

In my daughter's case, we lost the color gradually. WE feel for you. We too had to run away from the first derm we ran into. He was beyond TERRIBLE. Later, we found 2 different derms. Luckily, both of them are good. One is an aggressive derm and another one thinks very conventional. I know, it is a pain to have 2 derms. But, it really is helping us to listen to both of them. Particularly, their reactions to the condition, treatment methodology etc.

I wrote this atleast dozen times in this forum. Here you go again ! Our derm always tell us that, it usually takes 5 to 10 seconds to diagnose Vitiligo. One of the uses woods lamep just to re-confirm what he saw with his eyes.

Both of our derms serioiusly think that Vit can be treated in the initial stages. based on our journey, we think that, the Derm should be aggressive.
  • Hi! I'm new to the forum and the site, but with me it was a combination. Some spots around the corner of my mouth just appeared as pinkish white. Others gradually got lighter. My derm is ok. So far the treatment is re-pigmenting the affected areas for now, but my derm's bedside manner leaves a lot to be desired. With me I guessed what I had before getting an appointment. My derm just said it casually and handed me a pamphlet that looked like it hadn't been updated since 1984. Maybe she was trying to remain calm, but this isn't exactly a cold. Keep at it until you find someone who knows what they are talking about!:)
    • hello, and welcome to the site. You said that you have started to repigment. Could I ask you what treatment your doc is using?
  • Patches just appeared, I wish I could remember better but I think it was literally overnight when my first ones appeared after a 6 week holiday to USA. Because there were large patches on my forehead thought stupidly that it might have been that my fringe had stopped me tanning but I did have white patches around my mouth too but that was ignored!! I cant believe you have had the experience you have had with the dermo, I have mentioned this before but it really amazes me that probably the most iconic person in the world claimed to have Vit, you would think that any young dermo would take a intense or even vague interest in the topic as it is hard to ignore all the newspapers talking about a black man turning white - I mean go down your local estate and you will find people who know about Vit because of MJ. I was treated like a 'cow' 30 years ago by a dermo it is unforgivable for a dermo these days to be ill informed. I was talking to my friend tonight who has a lovely tanned bod at the mo, and said to her do you think if everyone in the world had vitiligo and you were the only one tanned would you feel odd? Of course the answer was yes........
  • Have you tried looking up a doc listed on the National Vitiligo Foundation's website?
I know it can be tough lining up a vit. specialist with your own insurance plan, but it might be a start.
And I really feel for you. I have been duking it out with my doctor for a week now over a proposed course of treatment. I wound up having to do the homework for him! I seriously want to send him an invoice for my time.
