MY DOCTOR SAYS HE CAN ONLY DEPIGMENT HALF OF ME.

I saw my doctor a few weeks ago. After examining me, he gave me different options. I was insistent I wanted to dipigment and he told me that the areas on my body that have not been affected by vitiligo is pretty large so he will only depigmet the visible areas of my body i.e hands, thighs, face and shoulders, but not my torso... HELP. I'm going crazy. He more or less said my vitiligo is too much to heal, and too little to depigment. Funny he says he's the only one in UK who depigments as UK's health association does not know about monobenzone.

I was so happy thinking I had come to the end of my ordeal, but alas I'm back to square ONE.

  • Dawn, don't worry. You just go ahead and keep applying the mono. You will depig overall. I only applied on my arms, legs, face and torso but got depigged everywhere. My back where I didn't apply also got depigged in the year and a half long process. Mono has a systematic effect and luckily you do not need to apply at every nook and corner of your body to get depigged.

The places you should better skip are underarms, genitalia and area around eyes. They will depig anyway due to systematic effects of mono.

    take care..

    Sanjay
    • Sanjay thanks a million. How much did it cost you to do this and do you mind telling me if you saw a doctor or you did it yrself. Do you feel happier?
      • Hi dawn, you're welcome. I was given a prescription for monobenzone by a cosmetic surgeon/ dermatologist here in Dubai. However the cost of round 70 US $ per 20 gm of cream was a bit too much for me to afford for 12-18 months of treatment. I didn't lose the hope though and kept searching for cheaper alternatives till I finally got one and went ahead with that. It took me just above an year or so to get depigged completely within less than 2000 usd spent in total..
        • what cheaper alternatives did you find?   I can't find a dr. that will prescribe monobenzone.  It's like they don't want the responsbility of helping me do something that is irreversible.  When you use monobenzone, does the depigmentation appear as more white spots?

          • Jeannie,

You have to learn about the kinetics, dynamics, therapeutics, etc about the drug before approaching a physician. In other words, you have to become to expert on MBEH so you can overcome all the phsycian's objections. It took me a while to find a prescribing healthcare provider, but I did due to persistence.   Don't give up!

        • Thank you. .. I will keep looking. Wishing you happiness. x
  • oh dear, can imagine what you are going through with the effort to Depigment, wish I can help. Hang in there and search further and believe!!!!
    • Thank you dear Ogo. How are you and how's the vitiligo society your end?
  • Omg , this has to be one of the craziest thing I've ever heard, my GP knows more than this so called 'vitiligo specialist'. Sorry but this is truly appalling, try to get a second opinion immediately and I've heard there are a few vitiligo specialist in University College London Hospital (UCLH). Contact British Vitiligo Society yourself.

    Good luck.
    • Thank you very much Sarah M. I'm so glad I put up this notice. When I get discouraging news I tend to withdraw into my shell and tell myself all is lost. I've battled Vitiligo for 12years and I'm tired and want my life back for real. I nearly discouraged myself from writing about it. Thanks again.
