My 9.5 year old daughter's lips are becoming more reddish lately.  To begin with, she has red lips,, but they are standing out now all of a sudden.  Normal lip color is changing to bright red color (more towards well ripe grapefruit).    If the vitiligo onset were to occur on lips, is there a chance that the skin on lips first become more reddish before they start loosing pigment ?

Or, is this due to some kind of inflammation ? dryness ? over exposure to sun ? or, some kind of environmental factor or some vitamin deficiency ?

I ask this because, when we visited our derm recently, he used the woods light.  He did find a bright spot inside of upper lip (at the junction where the upper half meets right half).  Then, just to compare, I asked derm to shine the light on my wife's lips.  When he did that, that same spot showed bright.  I was not expecting that.  Then, derm made a comment, possibly, even my wife is having vit.  We certainly know that my wife has no vit issues.  Her lips are very normal plus her body.

Is it possible that, woods lamps can show false positives ?  Did anyone hear this at all ?

We did see a very thin coating of whitish are at the edge of upper lip for my daughter.  That certainly looks like a good candidate for future vit spot.  We plan to apply Protopic.  Hopefully, it works.

  • I can only speculate on this.....but I think it is some kind of irratation (like from the sun etc). When the vitiligo spread to my lips they did not get brighter, they became paler. Anyone can get vitiligo at any age, so your wife or even yourself can get it. It starts with one spot, so I would watch carefully and reduce stress if I were her and hopefully she doesn't get it.
    • Thanks a bunch. I truly wish, it is irritation. We can handle that thru this or that, as long at is not vit.

      Lips are standing out.

Going to a different derm for a second opinon. Will come back and update this forum for knowledge sharing purposes.
