Hello,

Thank you for admitting me to your site.  I am a 36 year old female and researching about some white spots on my back and torso.  A little background...  I am fair skinned with dark hair.  I have had a small spot (about the size of a pencil eraser) on my belly that lacked pigment for as long as I can remember.  Never thought anything of it.  About 4 years ago at a regular dermatology check my doctor mentioned that there were a few other small spots on my back.  I have no idea how long they have been there - I hadn't noticed them.  I said, oh, I have one of those on my belly too, been there forever.  She just said, well let's hope it stays that way and sent me on my way.  I've been thinking about that appointment ever since.

I believe that I may have a few new small spots on my back now, although it's hard to know exactly when they developed.  In the past 5 years I've had two children and didn't pay much attention.  I made an appointment with a new dermatologist, but have to wait 6 months to see her.  So in the meantime I'd like to learn more about this condition and possibly begin a healthier lifestyle including supplements.  I am a strong believer in curing from the inside, when possible.

I would say I have experienced a lot of stress in the past 5 years.  I have had two children and extensive medical complications from one of the births.  I have moved twice, completed a graduate degree, am a full-time working parent and my husband has started his own business.  I would also describe myself as a generally higher stress person anyway.  Maybe it's just that my life is always crazy...

If I truly do have vitiligo, which has never been formally confirmed, I cannot determine what type.  My noticeable spots are only on my torso (one on front, one on side and a couple on my back).  They are fairly small, 1cm - 2 cm or so.  I'm not sure if they would be considered "symmetrical."  This is not an area that is regularly exposed to the sun.  I do not recall any specific trauma to those areas, although perhaps clothes rubbing since they are near my waist.  My skin is quite fair on my torso and so while I can clearly see them, I would describe it at this point to be very mild.

My overall goal is to at a minimum stop the appearance of new spots or spreading of the current spots.  I would welcome tips while I wait for my appointment.  Thank you for this resource and any encouragement or advice you can share.

  • Thank you MichaelH. I will look into your suggestions further.
  • I think everyone is jumping to the Vitiligo bandwagon too quickly.

Size of a pencil eraser head?  To me that's idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis or white sun / age spots.

  • traditional Chinese medicine can help you , i think you can have a try.

  • Welcome.

    Main causes are:

1-friction and rubbing all over skin.

2-oxidative stress (excess of free radicals)

Try to avoid #1 and reduce oxidative stress (www.vitiligomap.com).

    • Thank you, Flavio.  How does one eliminate friction on the skin from, let's say, pants?  I am a professional and need to wear business clothing daily.  All I can think of is maybe a special undergarment?  Tips?
