Is it ok to go to the beach with vitiligo?

So about a year ago I went to my derm because I had white patches on my elbows, and eventually they did a biopsy. The biopsy came back negative for anything so my dermatologist told me to just wear sunscreen because they're aging spots caused by sun. About 1 month ago I went to the doctor again because it was just getting worse!! And they told me I had to do a biopsy and I told them I had done it and it was negative. I don't know why this happen but I refused to do another because of a horrible scar left behind from the first. My birthday is in a week and I live in FL, I wanted to go to the Beach but I am so scared to. Is it ok even if it's for a little and I wear lots of sunscreen?

  • Yes, you can! You just need to be more careful and understand as your skin tans, your white patches will be more pronounced. There is really cute swimwear with UPF 50+ sun protection. They don't have sexy bikinis, think more along the lines of Sporty Spice. These two stores my favorites:

Wear a hat and sunglasses - bring out your inner diva. And, lots of sunscreen. I like Sun Bum products. I discovered them in a surf shop in Santa Barbara, CA. The work and smell great. Try the Key Lime lip sunscreen, yum.

    Enjoy your summer.

  • My daughter has vitiligo, and we are going at the beach all the time! Don't forget your sunscreen and you'll be totally fine!
  • Liza,

Happy Birthday. Enjoy your day on the beach.
