I have not posted in a long time.I have had Vitiligo for 19 years. For some reason when I was pregnant with my daughter my Vitiligo spread rapidly. That can happen as well as any stressful event in your life. I was covered over 80% of my body, face hands, everywhere! I did alot of research and decided to bleach my skin.I't worked great for me.I am a white female, but had very dark skin.It was a total change for me.The thing is, it is the emotional change that is so hard.Vitiligo can strip you of your selt esteem, and you have to accept the change in your mind as well as in the mirror.Vitiligo has become a much more talked about topic since Michael Jackson's death.I feel like I hade something in common with him, because my skin looks just like his, milky white. If you are thinking of doing this, think hard. For the most part, I am happy with my results,I'd rather be white instead of spending an hour covering my Vitiligo with make-up.If any wants to talk to me,please feel free to messege me.I can answer alot of your questions, and I'm here to help anyone!

  • I have vit about 30% of my body, around my mouth and eyes that bother me the most. What I hate the most is always covering it up, but I am very insecure and have to. I also spray tan once a week, I get narrow-band treatments twice a week, now for about 1 1/2 years, but I think nothing more is changing, so may just take a break, How bad do you need to have it to depigment? This condition is always on my mind
    • I know covering it up gets really old quickly,I would spend an hour or more everyday just to keep people from knowing that I had Vitiligo.I was very insecure also. Most doctors will tell you you need to have 70 to 80% pigment loss to depigment. I probably would not do it at this time, but talk to your doctor.Once you do it you can't go back and if there is ever a cure there will be nothing you can do.Depigmentation destroys all pigment left in your skin,it is permanent.Good luck.
      • Hello Misty !!! Are you sure that once you are depigmented - a future cure can not re-pigment you? Thanks !!!
        • No friend, it's permanent :( That's why most derms are reluctant to do it & ppl have to go through extensive counselling prior to depegging.

It is scary but depigmenting may be the answer if vit gets severe. It's just a matter of speeding the process...
          • That is too bad :(

I thought I read somewhere that it can be reversed to original color by a future cure. Guess I misunderstood. I should have known it was too good to be true :(
  • what is better being complete white or having some shady colors ?
and can you go on the beach ? i mean is it safe to go naked in the sun ? t
    • If your Vitiligo is extensive like mine was depigmentation could be your answer. If it's not that bad it's better being spotted. You can not get out in the sun because when you depigment you destroy all pigment left in your skin, and there's nothing to protect you from the sun.If you do go out in the sun you will need lots of sunscreen, hat, ect. You will burn in a matter of minutes.
    • Sorry it took so long for me to reply,If your vitiligo is extensive, (mine covered 80% of my body and was very noticeable because I had a very dark complextion.),Going white can be better. You can not get out in the sun,if you do wear lots of sunscreen, hat, etc. You will burn in a matter of minutes.Depigmentation has it's good and bad points.I wouldn't do it unless your Vitiligo is really bad.Thanks.
    • im curious to know if the depigmentation cream is effective only on the areas wich it is applied or does it spread through the skin?
  • Glad it worked out for you Misty. Hopefully others will be able to lean on you for support.
