how safe is uvb phototherapy

Hi everyone,

Is anyone doing uvb phototherapy here. I wanted to know how safe it is. I have read lot of research  papers and blogs and they say since last 30 years no case of skin cancer has come due to uvb phototherapy but in theory the risk exists. Anyone has idea how safe it is?

  • I m using since 3 years...no side effects....in theory it does exist...but it depends on dose..take proper guidance from dermatologist...it just skin become extra sensitive to sunlight after taking phototherapy for long...but can b manage with sunscreen creams...I m taking UVA ND NB UVB alternatively....and it really helped me to repigment...U can surely go for it...

    • Thank you so much Priyanka for the reply.

How much have you recovered? In 3 years has it continuously pigmented or it keeps going and coming.

I would like to mention same thing that..its the long term risk of cancer that I am afraid of. My doctor says I can safely do 200 sessions of phototherapy - full body/localised, which means there is risk after 200 which means some risk does exist.

And I am also skeptical of vitiligo coming back. Does pigmentation due to phototherapy remains for long? I am more inclined towards fixing from inside by lifestyle/dietary changes.

      • Pigmentation do fluctuate...it also depends upon ur lifestyle stress factor etc...after all it's autoimmune condition...nothing can guarantee full recovery and stable repigmentation....that's my observation....cancer risk does exist...but I think dermatologist will definitely give u proper guidance....if u have localised stable vit...may u LL repigment fully..nd pigment ll last...I HV seen such cases...but generalised vitiligo do take time and it is possible that some patches over bony prominance will never repigment....

Yes dietary nd lifestyle changes will definitely add on to your treatment...but alone this will not help..

        • Sure, thank you. That helped :)

  • I have been using UVB therapy for my vitiligo for over a year. I don't know where I would be without it! It has helped me to repigment so much. My vitiligo covered almost 70% of my body and depigmenting was not an option for me. I used to go to my Dermatologist office for the UVB therapy, but now I have my own 10 lamp unit at home. It is very safe and I have not felt any side effects from usage. I use it 3 times per week.

Last month, I started going back to my Dermatologist for excimer laser for hands and feet only. The excimer cleared 95% of my face last year. The laser works just as good as uvb but much quicker and for harder places to treat.

I also use Tacrolimus 1-2x daily. Some people use psuedocatalase cream.

Don't listen to all the naysers, it is safe. If you want to help clear your condition uvb is the best option.

      • Nikhil,

I would follow the advice of my dermatologist for length of treatments, however you won't find many Dr's that advocate for dietary or supplemental changes. Many, other than Holistic or Naturopathic, don't believe dietary changes will help. I believe, as well as reading about other's success stories, that you can heal from the inside out.

        • I think I am considering both uvb and dietary changes.

          Thank you :)

    • How much have you repigimented with the UVB? Is the laser working for your feet and hands?
      • Yes the laser is working for feet and hands but the process is much slower. However, as long as I am seeing results, I will continue.

If your insurance company will not pay for laser or uvb treatments past a certain amount, then invest in a unit for yourself. This way you have it forever.
